Retirement is official at 4:00pm CDT today! The wife and I were given a 4 day 3 night stay at a secluded cabin in the Smokies in Gatlinburg, Tn. Scheduled for October when the weather is cool and the leaves have turned. Better than some retirement watch I'll never wear. Wow, what a gift!! We'll be there in October too. We've been about 15 times and still love it every time we go back. We always find a cabin in Townsend and then visit Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville. Enjoy!!

Congratulations! I love my job but look forward to retiring for many reasons. One is that I may finally get time to see if I can get my XMC-2 working in ways that it should!

Congratulations. I have been retired since 2007 (from the US government). Have not worked a day since. Time does seem to fly past at a rapid rate but some days do seem to last a very long time. Try to find something you like to do and keep busy at it.

How are you handling health insurance? I could retire now (61) if it weren't for the $2500+ monthly bill for health insurance. And even when I'm 65 and can get Medicare, I still have a 4-year gap getting my wife coverage.
And - CONGRATULATIONS!

You are my hero, sir. I have 2 more years - waiting on #2 to graduate college and be off the dole. The wait is killing me. But enough about me - congrats and will you be organizing Emofests now in your free time?

All good advice and comments on this thread. I've been retired for 2 years. 1. There is more to do today than ever before 2. I'll never know how I had time to work before because there is so much to do 3. You'll never be bored or at least you don't need to ever be bored 4. There is nothing bad about retirement (except maybe not having that paycheck every 2 weeks!! ) 5. I have found, for better or worse, that I keep up with local, national and worldly events more than before 6. It takes awhile to get adjusted to retirement. Not a bad thing, just a realistic thing. At least for me 7. I love being retired!!

Thanks for the congrats and well wishes everyone. I'm looking forward to tonight when I will not be affected by the Sunday night blahs that I've experienced for so very long.

For those who have retired, how old were you when you did so?

I’ll turn 71 in November, and don’t look forward to living in reduced circumstances at all. And I have a defined benefit pension plan.

For those who have retired, how old were you when you did so? 71 when I retired 2 years ago. Loved the company, loved what I was doing and loved the people. Was tired of working and wanted to spend time with my family!!

For those who have retired, how old were you when you did so? 62 when I retired. I figured I should follow the advice I always gave everyone, which was if you can afford to retire then what the heck are you waiting for? No regrets whatsoever.

59, a year or so earlier than I had planned. But changes in the company's pension payout program prompted my bowing out early. Was disappointed at the time, as I really enjoyed my job, but absolutely no regrets after 12+ years.
