63. I was going to work longer, but it was a physical job and my body just said no one day. Thankfully I was in a financial condition to do such. Not elegantly but comfortably.

For those who have retired, how old were you when you did so? 62 Edit: I should add that was after working pretty much full time since finishing college at 21, so roughly 40 years.

Congrats on your new status! Any info on how to know how much $$$ u will need to retire. Thanks for any info you can provide. It's different for everyone, depending on circumstances and life style. Best to speak with a Financial Advisor. If and when you do, ask that they, whoever you meet with, is a fiduciary. More training and take an oath to your financial well being, not just an investment strategist. They can give you the big picture for years down the road. Or with the state of the world, blow it all on Cars, Audio Equipment, Women, Wine and song, that's the ticket!

Congratulations! Truly like no other time in our lives. Enjoy every minute!
I went out right into lockdown March 27, 2020 ... I just had to laugh at the irony. One thing I would have done more of over the past year was travel, but there's time for that.
Stay well!!

62. I was working 12 to 16 hours a day. I was also offered to manage 3,000 more people than the 1,000 I was already managing and take a 20% pay cut besides . I looked at the General President of the union and asked if he would take the job. His answer was no, I replied that's my answer. Best move I ever made.

I tried early retirement at 52 and it was ok. I love my job and went back to work at 55. Just got a promotion and committed to another 10 years. Will retire at 73.

Way to go, George! I retired in 2003 and have never regretted it. You won't either.
Now find a useless hobby that you can participate in, like turning beer into pee, or take up golf or photography/videography, I 'shoot' trains, videos, with my two DSLR cameras. I also enjoy astronomy, another great money pit! I'm about to combine photography with astronomy. Another money pit! I just bought an Astro Tech AT72ED scope, it's a 72mm F6, a nice scope for taking shots of deep space objects. I may buy an astro-modified DSLR if my Nikon D3200 and D7500 DSLR's don't do well. I have a motorized Celestron CG-4 GEM (German Equatorial Mount) that works well for astro-photography.
I retired at 55, 18 years ago, and counting, after giving much of my adult life to the Boeing Co. I took up golf that year, and I'm glad I did. It keeps me in shape, chasing that little white ball for 3-4 hours a day. And it's actually fun. I don't really drink much beer, or alcohol. Took me until a few weeks ago to polish off a six pack of Samuel Adams Lager I bought in Feb. I think their Octoberfest is their best beer. Don't care at all for IPA's.
Every now and then I hit a particularly good golf shot. I birdied the hardest hole on our course a couple of weeks ago, the much-dreaded #12 water hole, water on both sides and a long narrow green that is difficult to hit from the landing zone from the tee box. My second shot was from 175 yards out as measured by my laser range finder. I hit a near-perfect 5 wood that one buddy said rolled over the hole and hit the pin, almost an eagle! My golfing buddies said "pick it up", I refused the offer, and tapped the ~8" putt in for the birdie. It's the occasional shot like that that keeps me going back. Too bad those shots are too infrequent these days.
Yesterday I landed in the sand bunker on #15, a par 3, shortest hole on our course. I hit a bad sand shot and ended up in the other bunker! Wet sand isn't the easiest to get out of! I ended up with a double bogey 5, not bad for being in both bunkers. Gotta work on the 110 yard tee shot.
Golf, it's more than just a game, it's senior day care!

I retired at 55, 18 years ago, and counting, after giving much of my adult life to the Boeing Co. If I may ask, did Boeing keep you on their health insurance? For those of us with enough money to retire before Medicare eligibility age, that is really the fly in the ointment...

Exposure to Agent Orange gives me free medical for most health issues. If I hadn't had that 7 years of coverage I probably would have waited till 62.

I've been retired for almost 2 years and here is the one piece of advice I can give. It will take about a year to actually adjust and at first, if you are like me, you think you still need to work 6-8 hours a day at home. There are a lot of things that get put off when you only have a couple of days a week to get everything done that you can now get to but pace yourself because you have time now.
