I’m sure this has been asked before but in a search I just didn’t find it and if there is one it must not be current. I’m looking for a good mic stand for doing calibrations for Dirac. The last stand I purchased wasn’t that good and the adjustment knobs were cheap and just didn’t show me much quality. I won’t be going on a music tour so I don’t need one to go through the riggers of a tour but I’d like one that is competent in its duties. I’m seeking recommendations, thank you.

www.sweetwater.com or any pro audio store. The better boom mic stands support heavier mics and work for years (mine are about 20 years old now, scary). E.g. www.sweetwater.com/c396--Boom_Microphone_Stands Mine are no longer available, but on the "less expensive" side I've used K&M and he mid-priced ($75~$100) On Stage stands (not the cheap On Stage guys, look for the "heavy duty" models). I have this one from Amazon works great, very inexpensive but does the job well. I use velcro straps to strap the mic cable to the stand this keeps things nice & steady. link

Plus, I put an 18" gooseneck on the end of the boom so that the mic can be positioned up and down a little easier and especially so I can reach the whole measurement area without moving the stand. By placing the stand in one place and adjusting from there, it's easier to get the mic in consistent positions each time. Everything is relative to the same point.

View AttachmentThe gooseneck extension probably is helpful if the seating area has something behind it making it hard to move the boom mic stand. For me the area is open so I easily just move the stand over to the next position, I just have to raise or lower the height for that position and I use the full boom length for front positions and half boom length for rear positions, it's very easy to be very consistent and accurate with the locations. I use the boom straight horizontally rather than at an angle this makes it easier to match each position. I used to use my photography tripod before I bought this boom mic stand, the boom mic stand works so much nicer and is far easier to use, especially with Dirac.
