I have been scouring the forum for a solution to the windows 10 not recognizing the umc-1 and haven't found an answer. I am attempting to update the firmware so I can give the processor to my son in law who recently moved into his new home. Has anyone figured out how to update the firmware using windows 10?

As far as we know the current version of the firmware updater works fine with Windows 10...
Note that the firmware updater program must be able to connect to the UMC-1.... It is NOT necessary that Windows recognize the UMC-1 as a USB device or that it do so without errors...
- You need to use a SHORT USB cable (we recommend two to three feet at most) - You may find that some USB ports work better than others - You may find that some USB CABLES work better than others
- The UMC-1 can be quite "fussy" so you may need to try one of the "alternate update methods" (like running the updater before connecting the cable)
- It's possible that some sort of security or antivirus program may interfere with the process (we haven't seen this but we cannot rule it out)
- There may be a hardware problem with the UMC-1 preventing it from accepting the USB connection
I would also ask WHY you consider the firmware update to be so important... (If the UMC-1 is working correctly then there is no specific reason to update the firmware; if it's not working correctly then the problem may not be firmware-related.)

The UMC-1 currently has no sound output, video is fine but no audio. When I plug the usb in the computer chimes signaling a usb device has been plugged in however when I attempt to start the update a window appears with question marks.

The window with the question marks is an error message (which happens to not be in English - which is why you get the? ).
If you look at some of the "alternate update methods"..... You will see that you SHOULD be able to run the updater program with the UMC-1 already connected... However, sometimes, when it doesn't work that way, it will work if you run the updater program while NOT CONNECTED, wait for the error message, then connect the USB cable AFTER that error message pops up.
(If it works that way then the error message box will go away when you connect the USB cable and it sees the UMC-1.)
There is also a little picture in the center of the update program that looks like an IC chip connected to a computer monitor by a horizontal line. If there is a Red "X" on the horizontal line that specifically means that the program is unable to connect to (or "see") the UMC-1.
The fact that you get the connect chime is a sort of good sign... However, the fact that you have NO AUDIO on your UMC-1 is NOT a good sign... Frequently a firmware update will fix the problem if you've lost output on one or two channels (often the center channel)... However, when you've lost ALL audio, it's more likely to be a hardware problem...
Past that, the fact that you have video is also a good sign... (Or, rather, if you had no video it would be a very bad sign...)
It is POSSIBLE that the muting transistors are "stuck on".... Or that one of the regulators that feeds the analog audio board has failed... These are both problems that a competent repair tech MIGHT be able to track down and fix... (And we'll provide the schematics if someone wants to try...)
However, to be honest, the cost of the repair probably exceeds the value of the unit at this point.
The UMC-1 currently has no sound output, video is fine but no audio. When I plug the usb in the computer chimes signaling a usb device has been plugged in however when I attempt to start the update a window appears with question marks.

I do have the red x between the computer and the chip on the updater program. I tried a few usb cables and it's still there.

I would be inclined to try one of the "alternate methods".... where you start the program, and wait for the error message, BEFORE connecting the cable.
Unfortunately it's possible that your processor just doesn't like your computer... or has some other problem preventing that from working...
(And it's not especially likely that a firmware update is going to fix the specific problem you have anyway.)
It may be time for a new processor.
