My real question is lets say in my current 5.1 set up that my current surrounds are about 3 feet behind me. What are your thoughts on if I added the ESL 9's as surrounds that end up having to go about two to 3 feet in front of what would become the rears. THe ESL 9's would then be at the end of each couch side(pointed in). The rears as mentioned would only be about two to three feet away from the surrounds. Is that too close to really hear a difference to go from 5.1 to 7.1? Let me know your thoughts? Small room not much to work with....

I experimented with 7.1 and ended up staying 5.1 with the surrounds slightly behind and a little wider than the fronts. I later went to 5.1.4 with front and rear height speakers.

I later went to 5.1.4 with front and rear height speakers. What did you end up going with for your Atmos? We went with JBL Stage A130 speakers on pan/tilt wall mounts midway up the walls as we have an 18 ft ceiling. We chose them because they were inexpensive and have pretty good horizontal and vertical dispersion and sonically match our Revel mains reasonably well. The mounts give them about a 10 degree angle down that also helps, and they are a little wider than the fronts because that’s where we could put them and they are panned to point a little in front of MLP. They sound very good. Forgot to mention that the 2 surround speakers are at about 110 degrees horizontally from our MLP and elevated a little more than usual, on 41 inch stands so they clear the sofa backs. I have to be honest, if we had the room I think I would have preferred 7.1, but since we don’t have the room, 5.1.4 works pretty well.

Is that too close to really hear a difference to go from 5.1 to 7.1? Let me know your thoughts? Small room not much to work with.... There's a few things to consider here. Distance from seats to speakers, angles from MLP to speakers, and distance behind the ESL 9 stat panels. I don't recall offhand if you've mentioned anything about room size, but it's always nice to have some space between you and speakers. The guidance from Dolby helps to get things close enough to work well. If you go to www.dolby.com/about/support/guide/speaker-setup-guides/ there are all the various setups with the angles involved. In my multipurpose room the left and right sides have speakers at very different distances but the angles are correct and it works very well. I now know that if I had a dedicated HT that the speakers would not be closer than 6' to the nearest seat. My SR speaker is too close, but it's what is has to be for my current room. So the distance from the Surround Backs and Surround isn't so critical so long as the angles are close enough to what Dolby recommends. Will you be able to have the ESL 9 speakers far enough from the wall to reduce the rear wave effects, or would you be putting absorption behind them? The ESL 9 is a bit overkill for Surround duties, but it's always nice to have all the speakers be as close as possible to identical if possible.

I just think the ESL9 is very much overkill for a surround speaker. Plus factor in the space issues etc I would think there is a simpler solution.
