Buy for your needs now not for "future proofing". This is especially true for HDMI specs. HDMI is a chain so lowest device in the chain rules. How many HDMI 2.1 devices do you have that requires more HDMI 2.1 inputs that your display can support? I have a XBOX series X with HDMI2.1 and while games can run up to 120HZ at 4k it doesn't have HD audio while doing so. So from a SQ perspective running it to the display and then feeding audio back to the non HDMI 2.1 AVR/AVP will get you the same results as having a HDMI 2.1 AVR with on;y a few 2.1 ports available. If you PC game, its pretty much the same. No HD Audio available on the majority of titles. (Can someone tell me of one game with HD audio?) Now if you ask if from a marketing perspective should they sell one, then sure.

My TV has HDMI 2.1 input and eARC. MY computer also has an HDMI 2.1 output as well. I would like to use the eARC along with the HDMI 2.1. I Stream off Netflix and Amazon at 4k also. I do not think I am being all the fussy for wanting something that insures compatibility for years to come. When your paying up to almost $5K I do not think I am being out of line or difficult. I don't have to have it right this second, BUT I do want it eventually and as the previous post showed sooner or later it will come and that works for me.

We currently have an HDMI 2.1 upgrade board in prototype... which we plan to release in the near future.
eARC is part of the HDMI 2.1 standard so the HDMI 2.1 upgrade board will support it. This will be a hardware upgrade for all current XMC-2, RMC-1, and RMC-1L units (there may or may not be a version for the XMC-1).
We are also considering a separate upgrade that will enable eARC with HDMI 2.0 . (Some people seem to specifically want eARC but not care about 8k and the other benefits of HDMI 2.1.)

Might there be advantages to upgrading to the HDMI 2.1 board for those of us who don't care about 8k or eARC, like maybe it will have quicker lock-on or switching capabilities?

I wouldn't bet on it with HDCP involved. Even the HDFury 4K splitters don't switch inputs at an impressive speed, and I wouldn't be surprised, even at 48Gbs bandwidth, that switching isn't any faster with 8K/HDMI 2.1.

What’s on your computer that gives you an HDMI 2.1? I have a Raedon 6600XT GPU that has an HDMI 2.1 output. I bought it specifically for my HTPC. I didn't over pay and actually got it at Microcenter for UNDER MSRP. It's replacing a much older video card whose time had come, and the timing was perfect.

Not to repeat what others have said but thank you so much for the information! Being an engineer (a civil engineer in my case) I over think everything to death when I make a purchase no matter the price level. I also keep my gear for a very long time. I have been looking at Emotiva's processors ever since I bought the XPA 3 11 channel amp. While all processors tend to have a fairly hefty price it still comes to value for the dollar for me. Again thanks for the information! IT makes buying choices and much easier!

It would be nice to have a single processor to do everything, but I would consider buying an HDMI switch that has remote control and just feed audio to the prepro if I were to upgrade to an 8k display.

I’d suggest given bandwidth of HDMI 2.1 and difficulties of running this over any distance. Emotive could look to combine this upgrade with a relaunch of their old cat6 HDMI extender but leverage a standard optical connection than network cables.
It’s probably not an option to expose an optical port directly from the rear panel I t processors with out an expansion slot, but would be good to include the Tx end on the upgrade board. This would eliminate connections in the chain as points if failure!
The are vendors that offer pigtail HDMI adapters with the RX/TX optical conversion embedded entirely in the HDMI plugs each end. Whilst some include a fixed cable others connect to standards cables that even have keystone offerings to connect though face plates.
My XMC-2 sits almost 60ft from my display given pathway through walls and under floors. Whist I’m currently using other products it would be great if Emotiva provided and end-to-end solution such that you have one place to go if there are problems.
And I wall install unsung a standard optical cable say LC or MPO (or even offer SFP+ such that user preferred modules can be used) means you future proof for future video standards.
We all also know the current HDMI/copper connector is reaching its technical limit with anything beyond HDMI 2.1!
I’m not sure I’d even get a screen large enough to recognize the difference between 4/8k picture; so a HDMI 2.1 4K (with eARC) version may be appealing.
Future property owners could opt for a 8K+ solution in the future as the installed optical cable has plenty of capacity (up to 10Gbps).
I just hope the upgrade card comes soon and it improves the whole HDMI/HDCP handshake speed and annoyingly slow and continuous re-syncs, when navigating the menus of our various input devices!
Will the upgrade be free like the Dirac rollout or at a charge? I also hope home/self install is an option.

But on the bright side, "home/self" install has always been an option and should likely hold true for the HDMI 2.1 board...

Wonder where they are on this. The XMC-2 is on my short list, but because I don't want to ship stuff for upgrades I am waiting until a few brands get their HDMI 2.1 stuff out and stable. Looks like Anthem is about to release their 2.1 AVM70, Arcam has their's. I know the chip shortage is hurting many vendors and I am willing to wait a little longer if something is coming.

Current production XMC/RMC processors have an upgraded HDMI board which is eARC/ARC capable with the upcoming firmware release but still not HDMI 2.1. That HDMI board is in the works, though.

“…near future”…was almost a year ago. Do we have a newer update from those that know. Seems it’s also been a while since a firmware update. We made “investments” in Emotiva on the basis that these products would be updated and supported. Inquiring minds!

Well 2001 went by and we didn’t (and still don’t) have any Hilton Hotels in space, then a week or so ago was George Jetson’s birthday and we still can’t buy any Spacely Sprockets!
… will the future ever get here?

So per XMC-2 we now at least have the 3.1 firmware....so it begs the question of anyone of the much rumored HDMI 2.1 card, specifically with eARC.... Is these ever going to happen. I have sunk cost in the XMC-2 and will never upgrade got a gen4 processes unless it has a huge trading discount vs any cost of an upgrade card. My use case is simple I only use two input for an ATV 4K, and a Turntable (that I run on HQ Audi passthrough to the L/R front channels), and one HDMI output, and a 5:1:4 speaker setup DIRAC configured - that may become a 7:2:6 setup one day.... My rack is over 60ft (cable run) away from the 77" LG TV (I user a fiber HDMI cable), and would prefer to put the ATV with TV and use eARC ARC that supports Atmos. I have no current need or desire for any other features. beyond eARC. I doubt I'll ever go 8K! There has been the promise of the HDMI upgrade card forever, with a " We currently have an HDMI 2.1 upgrade board in prototype... which we plan to release in the near future." (KeithL). I'll go elsewhere than upgrade to a Gen4 vs. the supposedly promised upgrade card. Additionally given another thread... When was a revised *new* HDMI board released for the XMC2? Can those of us with the *older* board get one? The new boards were put into shipping units somewhere around the first of this year. As of right now there is no upgrade path that I know of but I would think there will be. Per the 3.1 Upgrade thread..this is hugely disingenuous to the early adopters of the XMC-2!!! if we did not step and buy in... there would have been no revenue to support continued product development to get the new cards into the current new units...
