I've always said Frank Zappa was the greatest composer from our future. Some think his music was junk while many can point out some of his 'signature' compositions as remarkable. Black Napkins, Watermelon in Easter Hay, Gumbo Variations, Peaches En Regalia come to mind as examples. Post your favorites (and covers by other musicians) and different versions by Frank, too !

Without a doubt, you nailed it with Black Napkins! I've listened to most of the versions Zappa played and others as well, but there's more to experience.
Another piece that may be unappreciated until learning the history of it is The Black Page Drum Solo. Terry Bozzio explains about how it came about and how he was able to play it. It's called The Black Page because there are so many music notes that there isn't much blank paper left.

Frank Zappa: The Black Page Terry Bozzio talks about how it came to be that Frank wrote the piece for Terry.
Terry Bozzio playing The Black Page.
A fairly good demonstration of the difficulty in playing The Black Page.

A fairly good demonstration of the difficulty in playing The Black Page. That is so wild! Yesterday I was giving my nephew a drum lesson (on Facetime) and I sent him links to some videos of drummers he probably never heard of. One was Terry Bozzio. And I found - for the first time - THESE videos ... and watched Black Page for the first time. Wild! So you probably want to watch this .... www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGeZGrJ1ICQ&t=1s

“Some think his music was junk “ Yes I am one of the “some”! He had some very accomplished players under his belt that made it even harder to figure out.

Quinn Sullivan is from my home State and was doing gigs with Buddy Guy when he was like 12. I saw him when he was 16 at my local venue. Tremendous talent. He did his version of Black Napkins on a Strat that had two hum-bucking pick-ups. Wow.
