Did a vehicle come from somewhere out there just to land in the Andes? Was it round and did it have a motor or was it something different?

I’m somewhat embarrassed to admit, that though I had great respect for Frank Zappa, I didn’t know his music all that well. I remember a friend in high school getting the Freak Out album and thinking, who the f*** are these guys? (that same friend played with one of Zappa’s drummers many years later). But I did listen here and there, and actually went see 200 Motels in a movie theatre (had to go to an art house in Beverly Hills I think).
What I remember most was a regular part of college party soundtracks. “The Mothers (live)”, and “Just Another Band From LA” were favs back them. Being from SoCal and knowing all the references along the Grapevine, and elsewhere around LA, was special for this one (a bit low brow compared to some of the other works posted here). Fun nonetheless.

That was funny! As you know David, I’m no Zappa fan, but the history is very telling to me. As Ironic as it was, I was playing in a very Avant-garde jazz group way back, around 1972. I hated it, basically, but it was part of what I had to do because of the circle of players I was involved with back then. Our leader was way out there, heavily inspired by Sun Ra and his band from Outer Space 🪐 and Zappa amongst others. Your video reminded me of one of our “pieces” which was entitled: “Trio for Typewriters”. Simply awful, It was, as the name states…..we had three old mechanical typewriters and written charts. for each of us. Luckily, as I recall, that chart didn’t make it to the stage! All of us were costumed, and our exhaulted leader nearly passed out because he was playing saxophone in a wet suit. I tried unsuccessfully, to retrieve a show that was taped in the Village, NYC, and broadcast on PBS.

However, many of his compositions are extraordinary. His album 'Apostrophe' was the first album that I really paid attention to; then on to 'The Grand Wazoo' and 'Hot Rats'.
