Just picked up an XMC-1 second hand. It didn't come with a mic. The owner tells me that it never included one. Is that possible?
Needless to say, I need a microphone. Can I order one from Emotiva? Or should I just buy a different brand?

Or should I just buy a different brand? If he bought it second hand it might not have had one, but all new ones came with a mic. If you want the mic for Dirac, I’d get a UMIK-1, better mic and more standard connection.

Hmmm...he told me he insists he's the original owner and it never came with one.

Hmmm...he told me he insists he's the original owner and it never came with one. Well it was supposed to come with a mic. The big feature of the XMC-1 was Dirac, and that needed a mic. The instruction manual clearly states that a mic is included, and also refers to using that mic to run Dirac. So if this guy is saying it didn't come with one, he was pretty negligent in not reporting that to Emo so they could send him one.

If he were an "early adopter", then his XMC-1 didn't come with the Dirac kit (which contained the microphone), but he should have gotten that kit at a later date directly from Emotiva. Regardless, I would agree that getting a UMIK-1 is your best option at this stage...

Hi manual says "preliminary" all over it. I'll need to read thru it. The firmware was at Version 1. He purchase it new back in 2015 only ran it for a few hours. It's literally brand new. Could it be the original ones didn't ship with one? I thought that was the case if my memory serves me correctly. I'll buy the UMIK-1, just trying to figure out why it's MIA Edit: Just read your post Doc. My memory is not too bad for 55 (sometimes)

If you need to purchase a mic, don't buy a EMM-1. It's ok if it comes with the processor, but if you need to pay for it separately, just get a UMIK 1 or 2. Especially when it's for Dirac, because the UMIK has had the sensitivity adjusted for better Dirac compatibility. Plus, the sensitivity is user adjustable should you want to measure higher SPL. It's a no brainer, get the UMIK-1, or the UMIK-2.
You can get it from Deer Creek Audio in Colorado. Great seller, no problems, free Domestic USA shipping. If I were purchasing now I'd get the UMIK-2, just because, and better future proofing.
Also, it no longer matters if you purchase from miniDSP, Deer Creek Audio, or Cross Spectrum Labs, they all come with individual calibrations files. CSL measures each mic themselves and supply their own calibration file. I have two UMIK-1 mics kinda by accident. I ordered from CSL at the beginning of the pandemic, but after a month they reported that it might be a lot longer so I ordered from Deer Creek Audio which came in a couple days. A few days after that the CSL mic showed up because I chose not to cancel the order, so I kept both. They are completely interchangeable to me as far as the calibrations are concerned. I have one setup for Dirac with the stock sensitivity setting, and the other is setup for higher SPL usage. And there have been times when I've used both concurrently with two apps running, so it's a win, win.

Dirac Live for the XMC-1 was released a short time after the unit itself started shipping. People who had purchased their XMC-1 before that point received their microphone when Dirac Live was released. It's possible that we missed the original owner, and he never got his kit, or that the unit had already been sold by then.
It's also possible that, since the kit shipped separately, the original owner might have simply lost or misplaced the kit after it arrived, if he wasn't interested in Dirac Live.
Note that really old firmware versions will not recognize or work with Dirac Live (it isn't even in the menu.)
Assuming his unit hasn't ever received the 4k upgrade it should be updated to FW v 4.1 (the latest version for non-4k XMC-1's).
Hmmm...he told me he insists he's the original owner and it never came with one.

I'd forgotten that Emotiva sent us the Dirac kits in December that year, a few months after I received my XMC-1. When I sent mine back for the XMC-2 Trade-In, I wondered why the mic didn't fit in the box very well! Totally forgot about that.

Thanks guys. I purchased the miniDSP UMIK-1 through Part Express, needed a few other things so shipping was free.
The seller I bought the XMC-1 says to me:
"Emotiva is 100% wrong. I did not get a microphone! Either except it the way I sent it to you or return it. Not having the Dirac is why I priced it so low. If you install the Dirac it's yours for good. Stop trying to get something for nothing, like it or send it back. If you keep it, I'm expecting positive feedback"
So let's see what I take from this: 1) He never got the mic 2) He got the mic and had issues with Dirac 3) He never updated from firmware from version 1 and shelfed the unit out of frustration with something. (It is mint, literally unused) 4) Positive feedback is NOT in his future!
#4 is DEFINITIVE. I simply asked if he maybe had misplaced it. He's been requesting positive feedback as soon as the unit arrived on my doorstep yesterday evening from UPS. What do you guys take from this interaction?

Sounds like a pretty grumpy seller. Oh well. You are better off with the UMIK-1. I have both and use the UMIK-1 exclusively now. I bought the CSL version.

There were a few units that were “misplaced” long ago.

While I don't find his communication to you acceptable, he might not be wrong (just misguided and uninformed). If " neutral" is an option for feedback, that would be my personal first choice. If not, then " good seller with bad manners" would be my second...

I've got to say I don't think much of his attitude...
Beyond that I would say it depends on exactly what you paid...
Assuming that he had received both the microphone and his license, and registered the Dirac Live license in his name, he would not be able to transfer the license to you... so you would have to buy your own copy of Dirac. Therefore what you've got is missing accessories - the microphone and digitizer cable. I would consider the situation to be about the same as if it was missing the remote control. It was up to him to say what was included - and what was not. (Although I guess he could reasonably claim that he didn't know it should come with the microphone... although Dirac was considered to be "a feature"... even among those who had to wait to receive their kit.)
Personally, if this was an eBay purchase, I would rate the "overall experience" based on what you paid and what you got... And there IS a separate spot where you can rate "seller communication"...
I can also tell you that he either never tried to run Dirac, or didn't get very far, because the software won't even recognize a unit with FW v1.0 on it, and there isn't even a Dirac Preset in the menu.
(And the instructions for running it were pretty clear about needing to update the firmware.)
