I have a UMC-200 that I use for both 5.1 Home Theater and music as well. Great sound - love it.
Almost all my content is streamed through an Apple TV 4K (only going to 1080 tv). But the Apple TV will take Dolby Atmos streams and convert it to multi-PCM 7.1. Which is fine, the UMC-200 does fine with multi-PCM playback — I get all channels crystal clear. Well crafted sound in movies like The Hobbit Battle of Five Armies sounds amazing.
The issue I’m running into is that Apple now converting songs over to “spatial audio” (which is music over Dolby Atmos). When I play these tracks on the UMC-200 it always recognizes the format as multi-PCM-7.1, but sometimes it only plays 2.0 (front and right, no LFE), and sometimes it will play full 7.1. (Same song, everything else the same). When it only plays 2 channels, it is not great because the subwoofer isn’t getting any signal and even switching modes to STEREO or ALL STEREO doesn’t produce subwoofer signal. So, effectively any music Apple converts over to Atmos (supposedly they’ll be converting most of their catalog) will have deficient sound.
After much playing around, I found that I can always force the UMC-200 to play full 7.1 if I first play a Dolby Atmos MOVIE, and then quickly switch apps over to MUSIC on the Apply TV. But if I pop out of the app and navigate menus, it will sometimes only play on 2 channels.
this seems like a HDMI “handshaking” issue. (Although an AppleTV bug is possible). I currently have UMC-200 firmware version v1.52.02.47.
I have a Yamaha Atmos receiver I could use, but prefer the sound from the UMC-200. Also - want to wait a few years to upgrade, so I’d like to make the UMC-200 work if possible
Questions:
- Is it worthwhile to try update to the latest beta firmware (.52) and see if that fixes the handshake issue?
- Slightly concerned that a failure in the update process could brick the UMC-200. Is that a big risk or is it usually either the update worked or it stays on the old firmware.
I’m a nube to these forums. Any ideas or experiences are welcome.
Thank you.
