Does the balanced input need to be reduced by 6db on the XMC-1? I recall reading something years ago that on other preamps that it was required to avoid clipping, or something like that?
Also, when doing the sound level test at 75db, I had to adjust the sub level of my SVS SB-4000 all the way down to -12db and it was still too loud. I then reduced my sub volume to get the last bit needed. I am using a single balanced input to it. . Would it be better to adjust the sub volume instead of dropping the XMC-1 to -12db?
My mic is on the way to run dirac this weekend. Just wondering what's the best thing to do with the sub since the output is very high

No. True there are some preamps that might have limits with input voltage but I ran balanced in with my XMC1 for years with no such issues and with a variety of sources.

We have PM'd each other about this, but yes I do notice a difference. Seems obvious on my system.

When you get your mic, you might try getting your feet wet with REW which will let you "see" what is happening. It's free, just needs some getting used to. I was ignorant for a while but then found some videos that helped, and others around here helped quite a bit.

See what your SVS sub recommends also as a starting point. Should be somewhere within the manual. My Genesis states to start at the mid way point at the sub level controls then adjust from there. My preference is to adjust at the sub controls to get as close as possible then if you have to tweak a bit the last adjustments can be made at the pre-pro.
Based on your description it sounds like you might have turned the sub up full bore tilt, the ran levels at the pre-pro, if so I would not recommend doing it this way.
