Hello, I was planning to use the Emotiva in-ceiling speakers but unfortunately I don’t have enough room between the floor joists and sound channels that are installed. Therefore I’m looking for an alternative such as on-ceiling speaker so I don’t have to deal with installation issues. Are the flat Emotiva speakers (the shallow depth ones) a good option for that matter?

I am in the same situation. Prefer not to use in-ceiling speakers. Cannot use the A1 on top of my T2+ because my cats are often on the T2+. It seems that the A1 is not recommended for ceiling mount by Emotiva. That leaves me no option to use Emotiva speakers for Atmos.

While it may not be recommended (probably due to liability reasons), it's still possible to hang from ceiling. My ceiling is the roof, and it's only got 7-1/2" of space in it, most of which is insulation and an air gap. If I wanted roof problems, I could recess speakers into it, but I don't want problems so I hang wall mountable speakers from the ceiling using eye-bolts and hooks. In the case of the A1, it's meant to hang on a screw with the head protruding through the flat mounting plate on its back. This isn't great for ceiling mounting options, but not insurmountable. DIY by drilling the mount for bolting on an eye-bolt. Then use a hook screwed into a joist in the ceiling. Screw another hook, or eye-bolt, or screw with washer etc into the ceiling. Fashion a strap (this will be a very safe way to help secure the speaker and an easy way to adjust the angle) that can go around the speaker without blocking anything and be secured to the ceiling hook. So there would then be two mountings for the speaker. My ATMOS speakers were also designed to be wall mounted. But they have a 1/4" stud which made it easy to just screw in a eye-bolt, so that's all that is securing the speaker to the ceiling. That turnbuckle double eye-bolt is expanded against the speaker so it pushes the other end against the ceiling to keep it at the proper angle, which just happens to work perfectly - the tweeter is aimed directly at the MLP. My speakers have been hanging on the ceiling for 2-1/2 years.
