Hello!
I am currently trying to connect a Schiit MANI 2 to my Emotiva XSP-1. Background: I know that the XSP-1 has a phono preamp and have used it with a previous turntable that had an internal preamp (which I bypassed by switching to "phono out"). However, I recently purchased a new TT that does not have an internal phono preamp and wanted to use the Schiit MANI with my TT instead of the XSP-1 phono preamp. Is this possible? I connected my TT to the MANI, and the MANI to the XSP unbalanced input (input 4, instead of connecting to the phono input), but am getting interference/hum. My first thought was that the connected ground wire was causing the hum. So I removed the ground from the TT to the MANI and still, I am getting quite the hum from my studio monitors. After looking at the XSP-1 manual, I can see that there is an option to connect an external "processor" and this should be connected to the Processor Loop Input. Would the MANI phono preamp be considered an external processor? I have not tried connecting the MANI to the phono input, thinking the phono input is purely used only if you want to use the preamp inside the XSP-1. Is it possible to use an external preamp with the XSP-1? And if so, what input do I choose for this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Connecting the Mani to and unbalanced input is the correct way to do it when an outboard phono preamp is being used with your XSP-1. Never use the external processor loop for anything other than a graphic equalizer or a tape deck. You can try using the grounding post on the XSP-1 instead of the post on the Mani to see if that helps. Or, reduce the Mani’s gain. Or both. Consult your Mani’s user manual for instructions on how to set the gain switches. Personally, I found my Mani (an original, not the Mani 2) to be pretty noisy when set to anything other than its lowest gain setting. Both my Vincent PHO and the XSP-1’s “built-in” are dead quiet.
