The fan went out on one of my "pro" amplifiers, so I measured the fan and ordered a new one. But the fan that's arrived is not what I expected - it's WAY too big.
The fan I took out measured 150mm, diagonally, from bolt hole to bolt hole. So I ordered a new 150mm fan.
The fan I got measures ~172mm diagonally.
What did I do wrong, and how do I get the right sized replacement fan?
Thanks - Boom

Again, begs the same question…..fitment is only HALF the game. Why would someone go aftermarket on something so important unless the OEM is out of business?….Words here like “sounds like” “guessing” etc.

You're probably right, geebo - the parallel sides measure about 117nn from each other. The amp manufacturer IS still in business, but this amp's so old that they don't stock fans for them anymore.

Ok, that’s certainly understandable. Often times an outfit could point you in the right direction for a solution on something like that. My own amp. is long gone from production, but I have a “go to” for it from a former employee repair technician.

The 120mm fan fit perfectly (despite the fact that the one I took out had a sticker saying "150mm"). All's well that ends well. Thanks!

Fans? A real topic! Can be 12vdc or 120AC or probably other values, as well. Noise is a factor. Some fans, like we had banks of keeping some equipment cool (not hifi) sounded like a Helicopter landing on the roof. these were 8" items and used 4 pushin in from the bottom and 4 pullin OUT from the top.
If I were to spec fans? I'd use NOCTUA which are perhaps the quietest and best available. And the 12vdc types will run at 9v or perhaps 10v with reduction output BUT a large reduction of noise. Good for late sessions when the house is very quiet, anyway. Noctua features a unique and quieter blade design. Mounting / isolation kits are available.... A Fan is not just a fan.

So far as I've been able to determine, Noctua doesn't offer 120VAC fans. The fan I did get is rated at 34dBA - Good enough for my living room.

I replaced the fans in my HTPC with ultra quiet, silent ones from Amazon. Made a dramatic improvement in noise. /b

Sorry, Noctua makes 5v, 12v and 24v models....... And appears to be a leader in silent blade fan tech. Very quiet ratings across a wide range of speeds...... LINK to PWM fan speed controller.....Good for the DIY guy. Me? I'd add up current required of all my fans, increase by 50% than buy the appropriate MEANWELL Power Supply. I have a 12v 36 watt and in use, it is dead silent. www.coolerguys.com/products/coolerguys-12v-pwm-fan-controllerIf you are interested in enclosure cooling? I've got a few ideas which will provide much better equipment life. Just PM me and I'll let you in on my researches....
