I recently moved into a new home that we had prewired for 7.2.4 and require more amplification. In our previous home, a 5.1 setup, I used an XPA 5 Gen1 with two XPA 100 Gen2s. The XPA 100s powered my 2 Klipsch RF7II's while the XPA 5 powered the center channel ( RC 64ii ) and two surrounds ( RS62ii ). I am torn between purchasing a XPA 5 and a DR3 (LCR) while keeping my Gen1 XPA for the Atmos speakers, or an XPA 5 and 7, eliminating my old XPA 5 all together. I don't want to replace the original XPA 5 but it seems like every processor I've ever used (Audyssey wise) have an issue with the XPA 5's high gain. I believe that's why EMO went with the lower gain in later models. Perhaps it's time to part ways with it in our theater environment and use it somewhere else. If you have any recommendations or opinions, I'd love to hear them. The space we are going to use is not enclosed. It's about 21' L x 15" width with 9' ceilings that is open to a kitchen and dining area. Needless to say I will be working on picking up a throw rug and some acoustic panels. Processor is a Marantz 8805a. However, I'd like to try an Anthem AVM70 in the future. As mentioned I have an RF7ii set along with two additional RS62ii's that I picked up years ago in preparation to going 7.x at some point. The ceiling speakers are builder installed Origin Acoustics. I'm not sure which version of the 6" model they are but I'm sure they'll need to be replaced Thanks Judd

Depends on how well the 'dealer installed' speakers match your existing setup. If they sound different enough, you may be able to pick 'em out by ear.??

The difference in gain between the older and newer generation of amps is only 3 dB. This should be well within the adjustment range of ANY processor. It's also FAR less than the differences in efficiency you're likely to find in different speakers. And the differences in sound between the amps are FAR less than the differences between speakers. Klipsch speakers do tend to have their own personality... whether you find that you like them or not. Therefore they may or may not match the sonic signature of a different brand of speakers very well. However, room correction will make a serious attempt to eliminate the differences between them. So you should at least withhold judgment about that until you install your room treatments and run the room correction. Thanks for the responses. I think I should've been clearer and maybe had too much fluff. My post was intended to get feedback on the amps listed above since I will be incorporating more channels than before. In regards to the 3db difference, I recall reading a while back on a popular forum (AV.) that multiple people experienced the same problems with Audyssey pegging their high-efficiency speakers to -12db because it couldn't properly run room correction. One person suggested that EMO lowered the gain for this reason in later generations. Perhaps this was not true. It however stuck in my brain as possibly being the reason years later. I recall this happening on the Marantz and an Onkyo processor but I can't remember if this ever happened on the various processors I had from EMO (UMC, XMC). Anyhow, back to the amps

Actually no... We never heard of issues with Audyssey. We just decided to standardize on 29 dB and we did get a few dB of noise improvement by lowering the gain. As I mentioned... most processors have a manual adjustment range of +/- 10 dB. And speakers can vary anywhere between about 84 dB and 100 dB of efficiency... which is a much wider range than that. (We've never found to be the difference between 29 dB and 32 dB of gain to be an issue either way.) Thanks for the responses. I think I should've been clearer and maybe had too much fluff. Using a Marantz AV7706. With a XPA 7 Gen 3. Using XLR Audyssey puts all my speaker levels at -12db. If I use RCA it brings the levels in range.

The DR-2 powers my L/R speakers, the 5 main channels of the XPA-9 power the other speakers, and the surround channels of the XPA-9 run the ceiling speakers. They work flawlessly. If I had it to do over again I may I have a DR-3 for the LCR and a XPA-8 (leaving out a main module). But I highly doubt I could tell any difference from what I have now.

Since u are possibly looking into Anthem in the future, you may want to look at their amps. I used to run the avm60 with the 525 amp from them. Sounded awesome in my setup.

I also use XLR's. I even connected -12db XLR attenuators to get processor to calibrate within range. Even then I would see around -8 to -10db. I will test this again once everything is connected.

I wanted to try their amps but the price was a little more than I wanted to spend, but it might be worth pairing their gear.

The "old" amps are quite capable, I wouldn't even consider replacing them. Add a Basx for Atmos, call it a day and use the savings on acoustic treatments. (maybe better match the Atmos spkrs) THAT would improve the sound much more than new amps.

And treating the room is like owning better gear. A win-win......
