Hoping all in the path of this storm are in a safe place and remain well.
It's looking very rough right now. May the best of outcomes be with you.

I have family in Orlando, Malabar, New Smyrna Beach and St. Johns, in other words spread out over Central Florida and the east coast up to the Jacksonville area. Thus far, all in good spirits and have not yet lost power as of yet with winds gusting up to 60mph. Meanwhile, I'm up in the Panhandle in Tallahassee, today was a sunny day and only expecting up to 25mph wind gusts tomorrow, in other words I'm sitting this Hurricane out and feeling extremely lucky this round. Definitely praying for those of you going through the worst of Hurricane Ian on the southwest Florida coastal areas.

Laurence, I wish the best for your family's safety, and hope the impact to you directly will be minimal. Of course, the post storm effects will be pretty rough. So sad for all involved.
A Niece and Nephew are new Florida residents as of earlier this year, in St. Augustine. The prediction for late tomorrow is looking like it'll be a tropical storm for them. And then there's other family near Charleston SC, but their neighborhood is pretty high so flooding has never been an issue, even with Hurricane Hugo. scott

I have family and friends in Florida, all is good, except one of my sisters lost power, of course it could've been worse, keeping the prayers going, for everyone...

It was supposed to hit us in Tampa. So I put up shutters. Therefore, it did not hit us directly! The high winds and driving rains were unbelievable. Saw an inflatable pool airborne above the rooftops. Several vinyl fence sections wetn flying. But no significant damage here.
Now I have removal of upstairs shutters to look forward to this weekend. Took the downstairs ones down today. It's horrible to live in a bat cave!
We never lost power but internet went out last night and don't know when it'll be back. I'm using my phone's hotspot. All Starbucks are closed from Wednesday until sometime tomorrow.

This storm is simply devastating! Incomprehensible. And this is just from seeing the initial imagery. It's heart wrenching to see what so many folks are dealing with. After being able to survive past storms well enough to keep going, it's looking like some won't be back. My Niece and Nephew got through ok so far. Their house and one across the street are the only two on their block that didn't flood. Weird. Their area is affected mainly by flooding, the buildings seem to mostly be ok otherwise. This is downtown St. Augustine. Their neighbors. Attachments:

Thanks for the thoughts! I just got back from our house in Cape Coral. Ian made landfall about 2 miles away. Mandatory evacs etc but I got out before then.
Our house is on a 200' canal and 6 houses from the Gulf feeder (Caloosahatchie river)
Sure was a nice night before I rolled out.... Any rate, I'm back at the PA house for a few weeks. Not sure what I'm going back to, but it won't be pretty....

We're roughly 20 miles from the gulf and ~2hrs north of where Ian came ashore... we were very lucky as the path changed. During the storm we lost power a few times; longest was 45 mins to an hour. We have downed trees, landscaping damage and a tare in one of the panels to the pool enclosure. It appears that the newer section of our community is out of power; we moved in March 2019 and that section started in 2021. I haven't ventured outside of the community, so not sure as to the extent of the damage in the surrounding area.
All in all, we sustained extremely minor damage considering we were once in Ian's path... simply lucky.
Reports are indicating that 89% of my County does not have power!!
My heart and prayers go out to those that are in far worse conditions than we are...

We have friends in Citrus county and they were very lucky as well. No damage and they even have electricity.

The important thing is you and family are okay. Sorry for the damage you've most likely incurred.

Condolences to all who lost things to hurricane Ian.
I've a good friend who lives in Florida and who nags me incessantly to retire to the Sunshine State. I point out to him that the entire State of Florida is a low-lying peninsula that extends into a warm, shallow sea. Furthermore, many of the main residences in major cities are barely above (current) sea level. There is already a strong movement among Florida residents to "build it all back just as it was." This includes construction of hundreds of condominiums on barrier islands that should never have been erected in the first place.
Much of such foolish construction is enabled by the availability of taxpayer-subsidized flood insurance at but a fraction of what it would cost if offered on the open market. But not to go there since it overlaps into politics...
New Orleans should never have been rebuilt after Katrina. Residents should, instead, have been encouraged to move inland to higher elevations. And so it is now with Florida. It isn't a question of if New Orleans (and Florida, and most major coastal cities) will flood, but rather when.
I'm voting with my wallet. Even though my Louisiana home is unlikely to flood for the rest of my life, the property value will decline to naught when the State goes bankrupt trying to support residents who chose to live on the coast. My retirement home will be at significantly higher elevation and in a State sufficiently far away from all coastlines that its value will rise rather than decline.
