I generally don't 'listen' to components online....but THAT is one beautiful piece of goods. If I were an hour or less away......I'd drop in, bring a couple suds and have a listen.....after first trying to find my DBX compander......as a 'parting gift'.....
'M' feed reel is Maxel? My personal prejudice would be to buy a near-lifetime of ONE tape and calibrate and do a setup for JUST that tape and let the good times roll.....

I agree. Maxell UD35-90B or 180B back coated allowing higher recording levels than non back coated tapes that will not hold that amount of signal. I used Back coated tapes years ago. Time to come home again.

When I had R2R, my personal choice was SCOTCH. I wish I could remember 'numbers'.....but they DID make a backcoated tape....JET BLACK..... I remember '200 series', but all long gone and I can no longer remember specifics.

Most machines in the 70s were biased for Scotch 207 or later Scotch Master. The only thing with more modern Scotch and Ampex and Quantegy was sticky tape shed syndrome. The tape binder breaks down and lubricant gives up and you have this useless brick of tape. Maxell had been immune to that hence my desire to use it especially the back coated formulas. I used TDK with pretty good luck too.

And than you spray the backcoating on an AIRPLANE to reduce it's Radar Cross Section......
I'd forgotten those Scotch #s.......I had some in a black box.....not the carboard type....with a 'hatch' opening but can't remember the number!
Not that it matters overmuch, but when I went to CASSETTES? I bought a TON of TDK SaX which was wonderful stuff.....My deck seemed to llike it.....

Scotch had a gazillion model numbers like 112,227, and many more, it was a real confusing mess. Geez. Make like 3 or 4 call it done.

ALL I remember for SURE Is I never bought 1/2 mil tape. Printthru was an issue. so, no 3600 foot reels. I DID like 1 mil in whatever length......1800 feet? 2400 feet?

There were low print tapes like 458 Ampex later Quantegy but the warning of sticky shed tape syndrome comes up but others were in the game but I forget. Yeah thicker mills are the way to go if archiving is deal. Actually a 2 track storing tails out eliminates the print through. You just don't get the economy since it is one pass only. But if it is a keeper once in a life time, a 2 track is a must, just casual for fun make those playlists and so on that changes like my socks, well you know. I had The Beatles Mofi recordings on 2 track kept forever tails out no print through, but alas it was lost in the move. Gad, not good.

My brother owned a Recording studio. Stevens board, formerly owned by some rock group. and JBL 4311 speakers with I think (IIRC) and SAE power amp. But the tape machines? I think a 1" Otari 8 track? And and Otari 1/4", but that MIGHT have been a stereo / 2 track type....so no 'flipping' the tape...... When It all went South.....as such things can do.....I salvaged a set of Senheiser headphones.....open air / foam style......
His partner ended up with the works......and has won some awards using his HOME studio, and he ended up with the wife. My brother never COULD get his relationships straight.
constrution of the studio is ANOTHER story for another time. My dad was a practical genius......

Dropouts on 'new' tape? I'd suspect it has been on the shelf since the last ice age blew thru.
I'd do a SLOW WIND (slow speed) than flip and rewind at the same slow speed.....
Are the labels / docs in something OTHER than English? Linear A? Latin? Sanskrit?
That'd give you some idea of when it was manufactured.....

Actually the process of unpacking the tape prior to recording or tape stored a long time is important to do. Fast wind forward, then rewind, and the record or playback. Old studio trick that works on reel to reel and cassette and even Elcaset. This reduces the possibility of drop outs.

Re Recording on the TDK LX35-90 tapes I have. The X7 has been displaced as my recorder recorder. Playback sure, but the A-7300 is it.
