first of all, I want to point out that whether it is a processor or an amplifier, it is the sound that is most important in my choices. I use the oppo udp-205 in combination with emotive xpa gen 3 5 channel output stage. my question is, if a processor can make a difference? if so which of these would suit my needs the most do you think?

Better start with are you doing ATMOS? Unless you meant XMC2, we’re not comparing apples to apples. By far, the loudspeaker fundamentally makes the most profound sonic difference in any system and is totally subjective. More info will help guiding you…..

In my opinion yes, at least in the case of the RMC-1L. Had the XMC-1 before that and to me in my system the sound quality was definitely a step up, both for HT as well as dedicated two channel music in Reference Mode. I do not do Atmos either and probably never will, however my reason for upgrading was for the sound quality alone. Atmos and all of the channels you can throw at it is only one reason to incorporate the G3 (XMC-2, RMC-1 & 1L) processors.

If you're not doing Atmos the XMC-1 makes a great preamp / processor, sounds excellent.

I wonder if a home theater processor could deliver the sound the way a preamplifier does? Yes. It's just a preamp with more features. I've stayed with preamp-processors because I've been happy with the sound for 2 channel music. With each processor that I've ended up keeping (some I've returned), there's been a incremental improvement that has been satisfying enough to keep me from investing the time to try dedicated stereo preamps. I very much like the DAC in the XMC-2. Here's an example. While not exactly a "preamp", my OPPO BDP-105 can be used as such, and I was hoping that its DAC would be up to all the hype that preceded its purchase, but it wasn't. I simply didn't like it. I liked the DAC in the XMC-1 much better. And now I like the DAC in the XMC-2 even better. Still have the OPPO and used it for all its other features.

On a personal level, I rejected that notion 21 years ago with my first one which was a Sunfire theater grand 2 processor. It also included a beautiful, sounding raised phono input for magnetic cartridge. It was my go to until HDMI reared its ugly head.

You dont like HDMI aither ? by “ old story “……… I simply meant that great A/V preamplifiers that equal or surpass the audio capabilities of many stereo preamplifiers only, have been around for decades. I like HDMI, in the context of how it opens the door to superior audio. Rearing its ugly head is meant in the context of the problems that have come along with HDMI, of which most of us are all too familiar with.
