Based on the reviews I read, watched, etc. in my hunt to find a replacement to the Oppo player I had, the Panasonic DP-UB820 is the best sub $1k machine while the Panasonic DP-UB9000P1K provides a more solid build over the 820. Not sure if it's on par with the Oppo for CDs, but for movie playback, either Panasonic player is a solid buy.

The Panasonics would be perfect replacements for Oppos if they included SACD capability. But, alas, for those of us that want to play SACDs it requires a Sony or top model Reavon, I believe. If SACD is not needed, I think Panasonics are pretty universally recommended.

Have also heard good things about those Panasonic Universal Players, and agree also if you need SACD playback looks like you’ll have to belly up to the bar for two transports unfortunately. Allow me to add one more thought.
After making the successful upgrade yesterday to the 3.1 Firmware for the RMC-1L felt I should try every single input I have setup and running into this device. In the past I have made the same comparisons and came up with the same conclusion. As good as the Oppo 203 is it still does NOT play redbook cd’s as well as my AudioLab CDT6000 transport. The Oppo is nice but it just doesn’t have the transparency and detail of the AudioLab transport. I suspect an individual will have to spend copious amounts of money, much more than the Panny, to obtain superb redbook cd playback using a universal player.

Samsung was my choice until they jumped ship a few years ago, although my non supported Samsung is still chugging along.

Oppo 203 or 205. 205s are absolutely glitch free when used as a 5.1 7.1 surround sound processor. Best thing since sliced bread. Only shortcoming IMO lack of HDMI pass through when powered down.

I agree but they’re available used. And Oppo still supports them with a $100 flat rate for any repair. You just have to pony up some $$$ to purchase one 😂.
I know of one that’s available for $2k delivered.

I have an Oppo 203 and love it. However I would not pay the crazy used price and Oppo could decide at any time to stop supporting.

In my system, when I replace my XMC-2 with my 205 I use the 205 for everything; streaming (its rooN ready), playing SACDs, bluray disks and UHD disks. When I place the XMC-2 back in the rack out goes the 205 and in its place goes an Oppo 103D for multichannel SACD and a Sony UBP-X800 for 4K. The 103 is an excellent machine and is available for $400 give or take. It would make an excellent transport for you IMO. And after all bits ARE bits.

Russ Thank you …really I don’t know why I mentioned SACD because my audio listening in my new room will not be multichannel. Personally I do not care for music in a multichannel format BUT I have to admit watching blu -ray concerts pull me in… it still is amazing to me how music videos and concerts draw you into the moment. I am going to look into the Oppo103D. I don’t care for eBay but I will also check out audio mart and audiogon. Thank you

It still performs well. Nothing wrong with stepping it up a bit. After all it’s been over a decade that I made that purchase.

Today I ordered a Panasonic DP-UB420-K from Amazon (shipped and sold by them). They have it at 20% off, just under $200.
A middle of the pack player, but adequate for my needs.
