Seems like the new way to pull in additional revenues is to add subscription-based features to products.
For example, the video below discusses Mercedes' new $1,200/year fee to unlock additional performance from their cars.
Hey, maybe audio companies can follow suit - for an additional monthly or annual fee, the manufacturer will unlock that extra .001% improvement in THD, or add 10% more watt output! Video can unleash an extra 3% pixels on the screen.

Video can unleash an extra 3% pixels on the screen. I heard about that performance fee that Mercedes is charging and then there is the heated seat thing where BMW charges $18/month to use. So yeah, why not charge for use of HDMI inputs or different codecs on a processor? It may come with all the connectors there but you'd have to pay $9.99 per month for each connector you use. Balanced inputs? Extra charge. Number of channels desired? Extra charge. How about the light in your refrigerator? Extra charge to activate.
