Both DACs have good performance reviews, both have more capabilities than I'll need, both support MQA. Both retail for <$1K.
Any recommendations?

Look wise I would go for the SM400

Look wise I would go for the SM400 At this price point, I want performance. ASR website recommends both, so not much help there… Since I’ve alresady got a Topping (D10s) and like it’s sound, I may just default to the bigger one.

I haven't heard either of them, I did own a D70 and I currently own a SU-8s which I purchased on Drop for a measly $160 and it performs very good for that price. Just because you have a Topping doesn't mean you need another

The more expensive Topping DACs come with full MQA decoding that I’d like to hear. I. Don’t have to go to the top of their line to get that capability either. Topping has a $200 DAC with full unfold for MQA…

Neither, I would go for the Gustard X26 Pro. It’s a bit more expensive but suspect it performs better given its build quality and somewhat different design philosophy. Dual mono would interest me more than MQA which I have no interest in.

The Topping E50 seems to do everything you're looking for.

S.M.S.L. stands for Foshan ShuangMuSanLin Technology Co., Ltd. Since I'll never remember that and someone is sure to ask, I'll take the less questionably named Topping. Especially, since many say that S.M.S.L. and Topping have electrically identical products and it's suspected they are made under the same roof in China.
