I ended up with beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro for a budget pair of cans. All I can say is, the do NEED break in. So many reviews talk about how bright they are, and out of the box, yes. I felt like I got my teenage ears back, but over time, they smooth out, and the bass gets better. If you are looking for great budget cans, they should warrant a look.

I give the Focal Elegia my vote. Discontinued was about $900.00. Now you can get for $399.00 from anybody who still has them. I listen to mine everyday. My Hifiman Sundara is for other reasons. But my Focal is for all my reasons, and seasons. Your mileage may vary.

I am a huge Beyer Dynamic fanboy for all of my production stuff I do. They just go and go and tell you what you need to know. Good Choice.

I was considering the Sennheiser HD 650s, but it seems like it cost so much to jump each upgrade on that line. I have an older pair of 555s and I still use them at night sometimes. They are laid back and enjoyable, but not overly revealing. I wish my mid-fi gear of the 90s sounded that good, but the DT 990 pros is a very nice upgrade without breaking the bank. I also don't like wearing headphones for very long, so I'll never invest a lot of money in them. I'd love to listing to the HE-1, but I'd never be in the market of buying them.

The reality is most are pretty occasional listeners. I listen quite a bit on my projects for church, and music and my own projects, but sure I do allot with speaker listening too so it makes sense to keep the sensibilities in tow. I have some around who are surprised I haven't spent more considering. Throwing money at Headphone listening allot is never a guarantee to your Nirvana. I just keep it practical, understand the compromises, and expectations and goals I have. I save allot of money and get what I want. So sure Turner with you 100%.

Yes.....100% 2 kinds of headphone users. 1. Dedicated system which may not even include speakers. A personal use stereo. Makes sense to audition many of them and not worry TOO much about just 'cost'..... 2. Occassional use. Most of us use them 'at need'. Me? Late at night to keep from disturbing anyone asleep....I just went to the affordaboe and of the Grado line and was quite satisfied......
