We bought and downloaded TGM when it first came available on Prime. Since we moved, we don't have the fantastic system we had in our other house but it is still a very nice system. The sound on this movie is horrible. It's not clear, there is hardly any surround and the dialogue is very muffled.
Has anyone else had this problem or is it just us?

It just so happens that I popped this movie in the player a half hour ago for the first time. The sound is incredibly awesome!!
I've been getting my subs back in shape with a new arrangement and tonight was the first test of extreme theater volume level. The disc is as clear as can be. I'm supposed to get the digital so maybe I'll check into that and check it out.

The UHD-bluray is easily among my top 5 movies for video and audio.

I would classify it as reference level in 4k blu ray in my system.

Ok, so only after a few minutes of watching the digital copy on ATV4K the audio is different. It's not horrible, but not as great either. Seems like the mix is different.
The volume level needs to be pushed almost all the way up, and I don't want to get to 105dB without adjusting the subwoofer outputs down, so I only went to 100dB. The subs were operating about the same as when the disc volume was 106dB, so it's more bass level and less speaker levels. It's still very clear, just not a good mix. I would never have raved like I did in the post above with this soundtrack.
As I'm writing this I decided to adjust the subs down with the remote, but this mix just sucks by comparison(see my next post below). It's clear, but just outta whack. At high volume, about 100dB, it just seems like a lot of compression in my head. I'm pretty sensitive to stuff that feels like it's in my head. It's not comfortable. It's ok for general tv watching, but again, it doesn't compare to the disc.

Sounds like we need to get the disc and forget Prime...

I'll add to reporting success with the 4K UHD disc. Fabulous and as already stated, a top audio performer compared to most everything else.

The sound from the ATV4K stream is not bad this morning. I can't explain why. But the bass now is no longer accentuated like it was last night. Is there something about a newly added movie in Apple TV that might cause the audio to not "be ready" immediately? Maybe it's more compressed initially? Last night I played the movie the instant it became available in my account, and just prior to playing the movie there was a message saying it might take some time before it's ready to play.
But here's the catch. The audio level from the ATV4K stream is 12dB less than from the UB820 playing a disc. This means that the volume of the XMC-2 is at 0.0dB, all the way up to be at movie volume. This also means that should there be any pops or clicks, they will be VERY LOUD! Kinda dangerous.
The sound still seems better from the disc, but might be because the volume level difference of the XMC-2. Dunno. But the difference is small, so might be placebo. Time will tell.
To find the exact difference between players I used REW's RTA and recorded the carrier scene at the beginning of the movie. I needed to know so I could play each at the same SPL to compare audio quality.

As others have reported, no issues with the UHD disk sound (and image).

Based purely on speculation... I would assume that the sound on streaming content is probably compressed, as well as processed in any number of other ways, compared to what's on an actual disc. We all KNOW that, since streaming content is allocated much less bandwidth than a disc, MUCH more compression is used on streamed video... And we all know that various streaming services, as well as various streaming devices, insist on changing audio formats and channel counts as well... Therefore we shouldn't be surprised if the same movie looks and sounds different on different streaming services... I also wonder if individual devices and services also deliberately tweak things to look or sound better on low-cost systems... (Much as radio stations are notorious for compressing the audio "so it sounds better on car radios and portables".) I also wouldn't be surprised if, when they get new content, they rush to get it up and available quickly... Then go back and adjust it later, based on more careful analysis, or its being optimized by an actual human being... The sound from the ATV4K stream is not bad this morning. I can't explain why. Here's a RTA of the carrier scene at the beginning of the movie. I've run this a number of times to prove out the consistency, starting at 1:00 and going till the music fades a couple minutes later. There is a difference, and consistently so, mostly in the lower bass. When using a handheld SPL meter to capture total SPL it shows the max to be at 103dB for what was recorded in this RTA. Red=ATV4K (Apples are red.) Blue=UB820 The XMC-2 volume level is noted in each trace title, and is -3dB for the ATV4K stream, and -15dB for the UB820 disc.

Went to dinner last week, with some friends of ours, and the subject of maverick came up. This is unrelated to the audio problems that some of those who opted for streaming rather than the physical disk are experiencing
This fellow was going on and on and on about how fake maverick was to his eyes. He was just talking about those incredible scenes were the actors were flying through the ravines and so forth he was totally convinced that that was all CGI and staged and I think I convinced him he was incorrect after talking about the making of the film but anyway, it was pretty funny , he said he enjoy the original film much more thought it was a loss without Kelly McGillis, and thought the effects in the original film were much better and more realistic! To each his own made me think about that expression you can’t teach an old dog new tricks

What I didn't like about the new film is the "Death Star" bombing run. Couldn't they have come up with something more original?

I knew that well before the conversation and had seen all the “making of” materials regarding the film but he had not, just saw it in a movie house and had drawn his own conclusions. that’s what made it so funny 😆

That is difficult even to imagine, after being pinned to my seat, like never before, for the whole flick at my place
