All three Emotiva processors can support up to 3 pairs of overhead/ceiling speakers for Atmos but I have never been able to find the guide to when to configure a pair of ceiling speakers to be Top front/Top Mid/Top rear. I assumed Dirac Live would be able to figure the location of overhead speakers out by analyzing the timing information (delay) during calibration. That is not the case. The result of mis-configuring the overhead speakers is that the surround effect became less pronounced and in some cases even confusing.
In my situation, I have a .4 configuration: one pair of overhead speakers between the front speakers and my seats, another pair in the ceiling right above my seats. I just don't have room in the back to have another pair. In the beginning, I got confused snd configured one pair at Top mid and the other pair Top rear on my XMC-2. For several months, I was not impressed with what Atmos added to my good old 5.1 setup.
Then, I ran into the following diagrams from Dolby and guessed that I should have configured my speakers to be Top front and Top mid. After making those changes, my front sound stage got substantially larger and the surround effect, front to back + side to side + overhead imaging, improved drastically. There is other sonic details that was missing before, like a church bell ringing at a distance, is now very precise. Now I know I have the right configuration for my setup.
So I think it may be helpful for those new to Atmos of what configuration they should use. If you have a pair of ceiling speakers laterally between front speakers and the listening position (location 7), that pair should be configured to Top front. If you have a pair, roughly above the listening position (location 8), they should be configured to Top mid. If you have a pair, overhead behind you position, they should be configured to Top rear.
This may be obvious to some people but it wasn't for me for months. So I hope this thread can save time for other people.
