Last night after a movie I had a capacitor blow in my amp while sitting idol. The movie was not a loud action packed movie. I believe it is a gen 2 amp. When it popped it was loud and lots of smoked rolled out. The amp shelf has its own cooling fans and the cabinet temp was at 68 degrees. My surge protector popped and shut everything else down. Are the Older XPA's worth fixing? I'm running a new Denon x3800h as a pre-amp. 5.2.4 set up with the height speakers being driven by the Denon. Otherwise I was thinking a BasX 3 channel front the LCR and run surrounds and heights off the Denon. I have contacted customer service already. View AttachmentView AttachmentView AttachmentIt depends. If they can repair it for a reasonable amount, then it’s worth it. Check the new XPA-5 price or other comparable manufacturer and the make your decision. I would also ask if they could replace the other similar capacitors just so they are all new and the same age.

Any chance you could get some wide shots showing the condition of transistors and resistors? I'd suspect some of those along with the caps.
It's a general practice to replace all caps when even just one gets blowed up. And those "blowed up real good!" (SCTV: Farm Film Report)

If you go ahead with the fix, get TIER 1 capacitors. Elna? Panasonic? Rybycon? Nichicon? A few others, too..... But it won't cost much more to go with the best. Get a schematic from EMO.
Your tech may check it for a fee, which will probably be waived IF you continue with the repair. Set an upper $$$ limit which may be the 'replace' point.....

“Last night after a movie I had a capacitor blow in my amp while sitting idol. The movie was not a loud action packed movie.” you can be sure the capacitors blowing out were not a result of that one evening, but rather cumulative and age related. Your last run with the amplifier was simply an encore performance before the fireworks sad to say. View AttachmentView AttachmentView Attachment

Emotiva is going to go through it and fix anything they find wrong for a small fee. I do have to ship it to them so that will cost a bit also.

Everyone makes choices, and mine is to have high end amplifiers serviced only by the OEM manufacturer.… Based on past experience if that option no longer remains I go shopping for a new one that meets my needs.

I think it would not be a complete waste of time to search around your area for a GOOD tech. Maybe visit with any audio group / 'society' within reach and get recommendations from them....... Short of that? Get the Schematic for whatever. I'm not going to buy anything ever again without one.... For TAT? Even if you have to pay extra? Get tier 1 caps installed.....

I lost 2 power supply capacitors in my UPA7 over the holidays due to being on an overloaded circuit that it took me too many tries to find the culprit on (frickin outdoor Christmas lights). Had no idea that was on the same circuit (don't you love electricians that take short cuts!). Any way, I tried to fix it myself first, ordered caps from digikey (~$13). If that wasn't all then I was prepared to send it in. However, success! Here they are blown, clear fluid on the pcb. Note: Very much long out of warranty.

The basement has 8 outlets on that circuit. Just saying.

My house is a real piece of work. One outdoor outlet is on the same GFI as my bathroom outlet.....and the same circuit feeds an inside outlet (opposite side of wall from outer outlet). Labeling in my breaker box weas done by Imbiciles. The ONLY ones I know? 20amp breaker to kitchen. Dedicated breaker to my stereo...which I had added. And another breaker which is my kitchen ceiling lights....but that also is some OTHER stuff....
The whole thing is a crapshoot. Even the over stove outlet SHOULD have been a 20 amp circuit to support a Microwave, but is a 15......
I'd like strip all the wall board and wiring and START OVER........
