I got a good deal on a used USP-1 quite awhile back. It's been working fine for me, but it didn't include the IR remote. The seller said he lost it. This wasn't a huge deal—especially for the price. But now I picked up one of these One For All universal remotes with "Activities" and "Macros." Kind of a poor man's Harmony. I really didn't think my USP-1 IR receiver would be the one thing not working, but it seems to be.
The remote works on my other devices. The OFA IR code database has Emotiva device codes, including USP-1. None of the Emotiva codes work. At least one other person using this remote said it works fine with their USP-1. So my obvious conclusion is something wrong with the USP-1 IR. Any obvious places to start troubleshooting the problem? I might open it up and take a look. I see the sensor and nothing is blocking the window.

I picked up a Harmony 700 for $20 and it's worked slick with many of my Emo gear. I'd trust Harmony over the OFA before I'd go tearing into the USP-1.

I picked up a Harmony 700 for $20 and it's worked slick with many of my Emo gear. I'd trust Harmony over the OFA before I'd go tearing into the USP-1. I'm pretty sure the OFA is working okay. It's controlling several other of my devices just fine. I guess OFA could be at fault if the IR codes are wrong, but as I said, at least one other OFA user is controlling an USP-1 no problem. They have a code for "USP1" — I tried it and all the other EMO codes listed. None work with my USP-1.
Shortly after I received the USP-1—after moving it to another room—I started hearing something rolling around inside. I opened the case and found that one of the screws holding the circuit board for the front controls came out. Easy fix. Fished it out of the chassis and screwed it back in. All the top screws on that board were really loose. I tightened all of them snug. I was reading that there was a problem with early Emotive products where the factory assembly folks weren't tightening screws sufficiently. Years of use and the jostling in shipping probably knocked that one out. Nice and clean inside the box. The seller said he never opened the unit or had any work done to it—I tend to believe him.
Anyway, maybe there is a loose jumper wire to the IR receiver or something simple like that. Hopefully nothing shorted because of that wayward screw!

Is there a way to tell which code set (original or updated) an old USP-1 preamp has from the serial number or anything like that? I understand there was a change from a plastic to metal remote with some IR command changes due to a conflict with another Emotiva product.
I bought a USP-1 some time ago without the remote (I don't know if it was the plastic or metal remote that originally came with it). The best I can tell, the IR receiver isn't working or at least none of the nine Emotiva codes listed for my universal remote do anything (including the code in the remote database specifically for USP1). I'm trying to decide on the best way to approach this problem before opening it up and checking the IR receiver.

I bought a used Harmony 650 on ebay and problem solved. This One For All remote is trash.
