Hi Keith, I have inherited a lovely pair of bose 901 series IV in immaculate shape with new foam surrounds. Now, I tried to insert the equalizer between my pt1 (output of the pt1 into input of equalizer) and the power amplifier (output of equalizer into input of a300) but there is no sound, only noise. I had an old sansui au-101 which works fine with the equalizer on the monitor loop. Do you know if the Basx a300 and pt1 have known compatibility issues with the Bose 901 equalizer? Thank you

This is addressed to KeithL, but I’ll take a guess. The recorder loop of your receiver is “line level.” It is upstream of the volume control. The output of your preamp is AFTER the volume control, and the signal strength is far lower. So much so that the speaker equalizer is passing as much noise as signal. One way to go would be to put the equalizer upstream of the preamp. WARNING: do not put the equalizer on the phono input or on any digital input…

Thank you, I have connected the equalizer as per bose recommendations. I am not sure how else I could insert the equalizer, would you please be able to explain what you meant? Kind regards

If the Bose equalizer is trashed, then you will have to search high and low for a replacement. Other equalizers do not have the range of the Bose equalizer. Normally equalizers do + or - 12db boosts or cuts. The Bose can do + or - 20 or 30db boosts and cuts. Personally, I'd sell them.

IF (and ONLY if) you're using one of the "line level" inputs on your preamp (should be labeled "CD" or "Aux") then you can insert the equalizer between the source and the preamp. That will work the way that Bose intended.

Thank you My uncle has an emotiva preamp (the one before the pt1 and i think) and the same emotiva power amp as yours. His 901 equalizer is connected like yours . It Has always worked and sounds fine.

From what you've described that SHOULD work. Hi Keith, I have inherited a lovely pair of bose 901 series IV in immaculate shape with new foam surrounds. That will work the way that Bose intended. I checked in the manual and the equalizer is supposed to be connected between the preamp and power amplifier via input/outputs of the pre and power ONLY, no mention of usinh the line level inputs of the preamp.. ??

The equalizer then, may be defective.

The Bose901 equalizer is a line level device. It was normally connected between the output of the preamp and the input of the power amp. But, if your preamp or AVR had "tape-outs and tape-ins" or "a processor loop connection", it could go there as well. Some older AVRs also had physical jumpers between the preamp and power amp sections... and it could also be connected there. And, yes, if you had a line level source, plugged into a pair of line level inputs on something, you could put the Bose901 between those two as well. (Although, in that case, it would only work for that particular source.) Basically you would connect it at the same points you would connect any "external equalizer"... There is a slight preference for putting it between the preamp and power amp. (That's the ideal spot in terms of minimizing noise contributions and the chance of the output of the EQ overloading the input of something else.) IF (and ONLY if) you're using one of the "line level" inputs on your preamp (should be labeled "CD" or "Aux") then you can insert the equalizer between the source and the preamp. That will work the way that Bose intended. I checked in the manual and the equalizer is supposed to be connected between the preamp and power amplifier via input/outputs of the pre and power ONLY, no mention of usinh the line level inputs of the preamp.. ??
