Id like to connect a laser disc player to my home theater set up because I think it would be cool. The audio is no issue but can the video be connected somehow? Either with some sort of an adapter or an aftermarket box? The player has an S video out and 2 coax video out jacks. Obviously Emotiva neglected to put those video inputs on their state of the art processors. Thanks Michael

Well, it is still nice to have them, but really what is left? VHS, Laserdisc, a Wii? Adapters like George shared all all over the place. The world lives on HDMI. For the record, it is not my idea. It is the industry trends. My AVM-30 had all legacy connections, and no HDMI at all, I had to get a similar adapter to see the OSD from my AVM-30 etc. I think Laserdiscs are cool. Sold a ton of them. Pioneer Elites were my favorite.

How is the picture quality on a laser disc compared to a Blu-ray? Now all I need is a kickass 8 track player and I'm done with my upgrades.

Perhaps closer to DVD. Having owned a laserdisc player years ago...it's close to DVD...way better than VHS. Geebo is correct.

Obviously Emotiva neglected to put those video inputs on their state of the art processors. Thanks Michael “……state of the art”……means, no laser disc connection. No typical end user in the 21st century uses such a thing, though it was cool back in the day……..

Unfortunate that the connection you’re looking for is unavailable, but it’s just another example of the impossible task Anyone who builds a Processor is faced with……that being to be all things to everyone. Components, such as the laser disk player (and a turntable for that matter) with a raised phono input. I don’t have the RMC but an XMC1 and took some of my record collection for a final spin with my former processor before putting the new one into service.…… And of course, laser disks production ceased 23 years ago Emotiva just like everybody else has to make decisions on what they’re going to put in and not everyone is gonna be happy so it goes.

Hmm ; you may get a shock when you see what 425 ntsc lines of horizontal resolution looks like when we have 1080p and 4k sources being pretty ubiquitous these days . But if you really want this the composite output is inferior to the s-vhs one as chrominance and luma are seperated better and not all mushed in just 1 cable.. With this type of transcoding the quality of the box and its bandwidth matters and can get expensive ; but with such a poor source geebos suggestion would do Its interesting the parallels between analog and digital with analogue cassette players still having a market of sorts ..likewise laser disc has analogue video rather than digital ; if you can buy a cheap s-vhs recorder and your discs are macrovision free you can use tapes rather than giant frisbees for playback ; sorry I couldnt resist

I'm obviously not looking at this laser disc player to be a serious option for quality sound or video playback. I thought that was obvious when i made my 8-track comment. I just think the old tech is cool to have hooked up to a top of the line system. Thank you everyone for all your reply's.

I watched "A Perfect World" on laserdisc because of this thread. I have a Pioneer laser player wired to a Marantz AV8805 through a device similar to what geebo recommended above. Perfect World is a 3-disc widescreen format set, so I had to adjust my Samsung 65" 4k tv to change the aspect ratio to a screen filling 16:9 ration because I couldn't tolerate the elongated picture (the disc was made for 4:3 televisions). The decreased resolution from current standards was readily apparent, but tolerable. The sound was good, but not spectacular. The convenience was irritating because although side 1 to 2 switched automatically, side three required changing discs. I have 40 to 50 Laserdiscs and have had the laser player hooked into my system ever since I bought it (in 1997). Previous AVPs had S-Video inputs. I think it may be a while before I spend any more time watching any of my laserdiscs - even streaming gives superior results. But I'll keep the player hooked up, just because!

If it works for the 8805, then it should be a viable solution for the OP. On a personal level this is not so much about the device such as the laser disk player, but the collection, regardless of which outdated format it is Case in point For the past month I’ve been having a blast because I have a 2002 Durango that I keep alive. Happens to be it’s got a cassette player in the dashboard and I’ve got tapes from my drumming career they go back from the early 70s all the way up to 2000 as I travel back-and-forth to my local park where I go hiking to stay healthy, I’ve been using the Durango to re-visit my collection of cassette recordings and it’s been a blast indeed fidelity be damned it’s the memories that count.
