Computer City RadioShack. The good guys Comp USA The wizNewmark and Lewis Crazy Eddie Circuit city Nobody beats The Wiz! When I bought my 77G3 from Best Buy, it wasn't even from the Magnolia area of the store because NOBODY was there! So even the Magnolia Design Centers have gone way downhill. The last time I went into the magnolia section with any intention, was to attempt to get a demonstration of Dolby Atmos. What a complete embarrassment (for them I mean) nothing seriously set up but what they did have was ineffective in every way. They may as well have turned on a sound bar that displayed Atmos and said, “see there’s Atmos” lol. Best Buy has their uses but you better know why you’re going there, otherwise you’ll be disappointed, my Best Buy store was also networking with Apple in the Geek Squad department. I had an appointment scheduled for an Apple battery replacement for my cell phone. When I got there they looked at my phone and said no we’re not going to do that whatever their problem was, they had the customer was always wrong attitude, which ensued in an argument that was loud enough to bring the house down after that , I go directly to the Apple Store for all my Apple needs.

Before Circuit City and Best Buy here in the northeast we had Leachmere and Highland Superstores. Early 80’s or so. They faded out after few years and then Circuit City came in and Best Buy soon after.

Bill Hunt, the founder and editor-in-chief of The Digital Bits, has just released his well thought out remarks on the subject of Best Buy leaving the physical media marketplace and what impact it will likely have moving forward. It's an interesting read and, personally, I agree with everything he's saying. You'll find his article... HERE. I know we tend to get off topic, but I thought it might be nice to wrap up this discussion with a good final summary of the original theme of this thread...

I own a fairly robust collection of physical media.
Ironically enough, the last disk I bought WAS from Best Buy.
That being said when I look at my collection, and I think about it in terms of percentages as to where I got all of that stuff from, the Best Buy percentage (at the end of the day) is probably in and around 3%.

Best Buy will likely die for the same reason Circuit City failed. They had fired all skilled workers who got commission and hired low wage people with zero skill. Best Buy Geek Squad is about the lowest paying tech jobs available and are often filled with new employees starting out in the field. I have to drive a bit to get to a Best Buy, but the last time I went, hardly anyone was in the store. To the point it was almost a uncomfortable liminal space. In general, the workers don't care, and it's not a pleasant place to visit. One can argue that the brick in mortar store is dead in this day and age, and that might be true to a point, but it really doesn't help when stores have lousy shopping expereinces.
