HEREMy latest physical media just showed up this afternoon in today’s mailbox from Best Buy. Not only was it from Best Buy but by employing an earned credit through my account I got the best price on the Internet…… Better than any other online retailer

I still do not think the band width is there with the audio portion of a movie. Hey that’s me.

I still do not think the band width is there with the audio portion of a movie. Hey that’s me. We may be stuck with streaming for movies, but there's good reason to believe the sound is not as good as what can be delivered on disk. Music, on the other hand, has other options .... I like to listen to multichannel and Atmos music, mostly classical or jazz recorded in acoustically live spaces with minimal processing. Apple Music sure does have a lot of Atmos music, but I have compared their stream to downloads of the same music and the download is always better. And by download I mean buying the album from one of the sources that sell FLAC or DSD 5.1 tracks and also for Atmos (and sometimes DTSX and Auro3D) MKV files in Atmos Dolby TrueHD and MP4. The Dolby TrueHD generally has 10x the bitrate of the MP4 .... and the Dolby TrueHD version always sounds more spacious and dynamic than the Apple Music stream. I listen to both, but for serious focused listening if I like an album I buy the MKV. If I can't get a download, some titles are available on Pure Audio Blu-ray with multiple versions including Atmos.

Not sure about anyone else, but I can't recall the last time I actually went to one of their store; I've been buying my 4k BRs on-line during holiday sales. That being said, I can't see it dying off completely... didn't Disney make an announcement of new 4k disc releases?

Decades ago, when Best Buy first arrived on the scene, I saw their name as an oxymoron, and after a bit of browsing “renamed” the place, “WORST BUY”….
…….,with such an arrogant name they sure as hell weren’t giving anything away.
That being said, you never know where you’re gonna get a deal. I do business with them occasionally, and I’ve received some terrific deals only recently in fact.

Our local Best Buy store is pretty dead these days. Its hard to believe my smallish town used to have a Circuit City in addition to Best Buy and most evenings they were both packed with customers. Though, this was back when people were buying things like printers, digital cameras and video cameras. Now we are a largely paperless society and our phones have replaced a large segment of the camera and video camera market. Also, the need to upgrade your computer every two years has subsided. Oh how times change...

Since they're one of the only games in town, I try to support BestBuy, though it’s been a while since I bought any physical media from them. I like being able to go in the store and see what’s available, and return it there if it doesn’t work out. It tends to be more computer related stuff, monitors, Apple products, but I even got a car stereo there (CarPlay)! I’ll admit that Amazon is awfully convenient for a lot of things (like discs), but if Bestbuy sells something I want, I try to get it from them.

I agree… While Best Buy isn’t always the first stop on my shopping list, I’ve always tried to support them when it comes to items that aren’t easily sourced from other stores. Especially when it comes to big ticket items like televisions and large home appliances. In my local market (Baltimore/Washington DC), the only alternatives to Best Buy for large home appliances are Home Depot and Lowes. Sears went bye-bye in this area many years ago. As far as physical media goes, I’ll admit that nearly all of my purchases come from Amazon. So Best Buy leaving this segment of the market won’t have that much of an impact on me. However, there have been times in the past where Amazon has chosen to pick fights with certain studios (the most recent being Disney/Marvel/Lucasfilm) and not offer their titles for sale. During those times, I could always rely on Best Buy to have what I wanted. I just ordered online and picked it up in the store on my way home from work. I may be an outlier, but will miss this from them...

I used to look at Best Buy for TV's, but now pretty much look for them at Costco first followed by Crutchfield. Costco has a 90 day return, no questions asked policy and Crutchfield's is 60 day. Ever since a friend of mine was screwed over by Best Buy Magnolia on a high end Sony set that developed stuck pixels, I have avoided them for these purchases. For large home appliances, there are some local Mom & Pop shops that provide better service than the big box stores, but their brand selection is limited and prices higher. Costco also does appliance sales on-line. I find that I don't go into Best Buy like I used to and will likely spend less time there now that they are dropping physical media.

I've been a Costco member from the early days when they were know as "Price Club". Then there's also Sam's Club and BJ's Wholesale Club in that mix as well. I've made many purchases from Crutchfield (who also has outstanding customer and technical support) over the years and have been happy with them. Of course I'm getting off track as none of the above carry Blu-ray discs or CDs. But yes, we'll always be able to find a good TV at a fair price... and that's assuming that this is the beginning of an even bigger demise for Best Buy (which I don't believe that it is).

It's sad actually... maybe not monthly, but I recall going to BB several times a year to check out TVs and walk through their Magnolia sections Based on price, free extended warranties, free delivery, return policy, etc. I've been going to Costco to check out the latest TVs instead.

Earlier this year I joined Costco as it’s closer to where I live than Sam’s Club. I’ve noticed TV/OLEDs and there pricing and they are every bit as competitive price-wise as Best Buy. However they both play the slightly different model number game and that allows them to not price match since the Sony A80L isn’t the same the Sony A801L, even though they are identical in every way but the model number(I made these models up) but the idea is this. Back on topic, I will miss BestBuys Marvel steelbook exclusives but if Amazon and Walmart offer these I won’t miss BestBuy nearly as much, but they will continue to be my go to for new flat panels when I’m in the market for the next OLED.

Over the years I’ve supported my local Best Buy as they did offer many advantages and the employed many local people as well as adding to the tax bass. Over time I have had strong relationships with many managers and employees. I recently purchased a Grateful Dead LP for a good price and felt happy about buying local. I too operate a local business. Where will you buy your next discs from? Physical media is always best IMO

I was in Target today, noticed they have physical media including a pretty wide selection of vinyl from 70’s Grateful Dead American Beauty, Fleetwood Mac Rumors, 80’s AC/DC, etc on up to more current Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift and a lot of other stuff in between. Kinda surprising really. They also had a moderate sized Blu-Ray selection, but I forgot to look for UHD. Always surprised they carry a fair amount of TVs and Apple stuff too. They’re pretty convenient. but don’t compare to BestBuy or Costco for selection. I mostly go there for yogurt 😊
