In the past Apple iPhones and iPads supported USB audio output via the "lightning-to-USB camera adapter". This has been true so far for every iOS version up to iOS16.x
We have now heard that this support may be gone in the recent update to iOS17. It seems that, in iOS17, while USB audio is supported via USB-C, it is no longer supported via lightning using the camera adapter.
There may be exceptions to this, or ways around it, but any of you currently running iOS16 may wish to consider it before upgrading to iOS17. (And we would be eager to know of any known ways around this limitation.)

I recently installed the upgrade on my Mac-OS, and for the first time ever, a firmware upgrade had to be installed on my Apple cinema Monitor (previously running on a Lightning connector). Perhaps Apple’s transition from FireWire to USB-C goes beyond IOS?

Note:
One of our guys tried this here, on an iPhone running iOS17, and a PT2, with the "lightning-to-USB-A camera adapter", and it DID work. (So the situation seems more complicated than we thought.)
However I would definitely take this into consideration when deciding whether to do the upgrade or not. (Especially since I'm told that reinstalling iOS16 may not be an option after upgrading to iOS17.)

I'd like to hear more about the test conditions of the original report, pretty vague, but, since I hadn't tested, I tried the following: Apple Music > macOS Sonoma 14.1 > MacBook Pro 14 M1 > USB-C to B > Emotiva DC-1 Apple Music > iPadOS 17.1 > iPad Pro 11G3 > USB-C to B > Emotiva DC-1 Apple Music > iOS 17.1 > iPhone 13 Pro > Lighting Camera Adapter > USB-A to B —> Emotiva DC-1 The variables I can imagine are: iPhone Model, Music App (Apple Music, Amazon Music, etc), cables, DAC, settings (probably others). I'm going to add a link to this thread to the iOS 17 thread. However, I'm glad you posted this as I used my 'Guilty Pleasures' playlist to test ... and I'm still listening!

Perhaps Apple’s transition from FireWire to USB-C goes beyond IOS? Technically it's FireWire to ThunderBolt (currently 4), with USB-C as the connector / medium. But Firewire has been gone from Apple products (at least Macs) since I believe 2016, so your issue is probably not related to what's being reported here. I have seen Thunderbolt to Firewire adapters that may be another option, though it sounds like the firmware did it.

This post was born out of a question I had asked support. Until upgrading to iOS 17, I had used the following setup:
8th gen ipad/6th gen iPad/iPhone 11 Pro max --> Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter --> Lightning cable (charging power)/USB A to USB B cable --> Emotiva PT1 preamp
This setup meets the requirements for playing 'hi-res lossless' out of Apple Music, per Apple.
This worked great, but after upgrading, audio will only play audio out of the iPad speakers. I know the adapter still works because i am able to charge the ipad through it.
Some things I've swapped out:
- other lighting-based iPhones - USB cables - Apple and non-Apple lightning cables - another lightning to USB 3 adapter.
I had left the 6th gen ipad on iOS 16.6.x and was able to get audio out of it into the PT1. I had also connected USB-C based devices (iPad Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max) to the PT1 and was able to get audio playback via USB.

Good info, I tested my iPhone setup again while charging and it still worked, also confirmed my camera adapter as a model A1619 (not easy to read!). The most obvious differences in our setups is Apple hardware 'age', my iPhone and iPad are newer, but we're also using different DACs, so that can't be discounted. We probably need some more test configurations.

Good Grief! I could learn to hate APPLE. Everytime I turn around, it is another work around. When I updated my iMac? Photoshop refused to work until I UNinstalled and REinstalled. But that was temporary and when I updated again, that was IT..... Apparently some conflict about 32bit V 64bit......
Now? I have an Iphone 6S+ which is used ONLY as a music player. I won't update that one again....ever. But my iPhone 13 has NO headphone jack so one of the above (maybe) solutions is what I need fall back on. But apparently No Predicting what will or won't happen should I upgrade. And Good for Apple that you 'can never go back'......So if you are screwed it is well and forever.
