Emailed customer support on this yesterday but haven't heard back except an auto response type of email saying a ticket had been created:
Received my MR1. Running a 7.2.4 set up. Mostly all is well. Got the set up and speaker calibration complete last night, and agree with others that the dynamics/sound quality is
leaps better than say Denon. However on shut down (power off) what "sounds/noises" would be considered normal? I understand there should be some relay switching sounds, but what I hear through the speakers is a sound almost like what I'd call a screeching, pulsing, staticky modem...it is somewhat low pitched and loudness varies on how high or low the volume is set at...., . Just wondering if it is something to be concerned about. For now I am trying to remember to lower the volume before turning the MR1 off.

So Damon emailed me what I suspected---the process is normal at shutdown, however I should not be hearing it as generally the receiver should be muting right as the power off is pressed. His theory was that if I was using CEC and say the TV remote this may be the cause. So I tried turning it off with just the MR1 remote---but same. I imagine I will hear more soon. Hopefully it is not damaging in any way....

That “problem” goes way back (for me) with Carver amplifiers before I even heard of Emotiva. At the time, I characterized it as “ capacitor discharge”. Like you, I heard it through the speakers, and it was harmless enough, but it was exacerbated by the issue of having those amplifiers as bridged monoblock producing 1000 W per channel at 8ohm. That gives you some serious crackling at the end of the show trust me. When I evolved into multi channel amplifiers with Sunfire (also a Bob Carver product) My separate combination with them produced no such noise. I wasn’t the only one that noticed it, and it appeared in the future. They engineered a work around.

Yeah he sent me some firmware to try; it didnt work, But anyway except for some peculiarities which I guess is just the emotiva way, it seems a nice product. THe peculiarity--when trying to switch sources it must see the other device before it will switch on the front panel and cut off what was the current source---as in the other device powered up ready to go. Guess that makes sense, just not the way I had been used to doing things. The new firmware also made the slight popping when switching a bit more pronounced.

I have learned the hard way (thankfully no damage) that scenarios for those dreaded, digital pops and noises are part of today’s deal under certain circumstances and are here to stay. The best thing we can do as users is to be aware that it can happen and do whatever you can do to minimize it. Especially if you have a high wattage, home theater or stereo system that is primarily digital. Not to derail the thread topic at all because actually what I’m talking about is a separate issue from the shutdown and those noises in some cases associated with it.

Something like this happens on my XMC2 post firmware 3.2.
When I switch inputs, it’s unmuted for the first 1/2 second or so - I have to remind myself to turn down the volume before switching inputs otherwise it’s a short loud burst of sound. It’s not weird noise, actual program material.
The muting thing seems to be a challenge.

Yea final answer from tech is thanks for trying the firmware. Just turn down the volume and I'll tell our coder.

Damon decided to swap it out for a new one advance return label. Unit made the UPS truck tonight so a new one should be shipping to me tomorrow. I will report back after new one arrives and is in the system.

Forgot to report back after new unit. There was no difference. MAinly the wife uses the system so she just turns down the volume before turning off. I understand there was another firmware upgrade available last month. When I find time maybe I will try that. edit---ah I see it is the same firmware I was emailed back in Dec.
