If one of my XPA-1 G2 fails (lots of hiss coming from speaker) will a DR-1 be suitable for replacement or am I looking at buying 2 new amps?

I've owned both and probably wouldn't do what you propose. That said I also have no doubt others will say there is little to no difference in their audio performance. For sure the DR series of amps are really dead quiet and did not find the XPA-1 G2 to be this quiet especially when switching to Class A mode. Hope this helps.

How do you know it 'switches' to class 'A'? Isn't that just at the very lowest powers....up to 20 or 30 watts, than gradually shifting to A/B?
No 'brick wall' of shift.
The G2 you ref? That's the one with the A/A-B switch right? Just holds the bias higher / longer so you get some more 'A' watts before shift.
Don't forget that this amp simply doesn't weigh enough to be a fully 'A' amp...(not advertised as such, admitted) You might say that 75lb is plenty,
and it IS......just not for a fully 'A' amp.....the pass XS300 goes 300lb per channel and will heat your house as a stereo PAIR.....4 chassis and god only
knows power consumption.
But I wouldnt' worry about the XPA-1 G2 class of operation or anything like that. It's a terrific amp and except for IF you need to ship it? Wonderful.
Great measured perforamnce backed up with actual LISTENING (not always the case)
As for amused2death? I'm looking at the output devices. Getting 'leaky' for whatever reason. Bias may have shifted over time......OP doesnt' mention if they are
running HOT or not.....or if one is and the other isn't hot.....
I'd tend to fix it. Especially IF (long shot) you actually need that kind of power. replacing would be costly. And you'll need a mondo stereo amp or another 'pair'.......I would
not replace ONE with something different. Gain will be different probably and the sonic signiture may be a little different as well.....
Do some elementary trouble shooting FIRST. Swap cables (both speaker and input) ONE at a time. Check for bad connections. Put it back together with a good cleaning and some
deoxit. Wiggle connectors, too......on the bad amp. Even a good and unseen CAT CHEW can have bad effects.

Realistically you will never really hear a difference in the amps, but if you are anything like me you will “hear” just enough to drive you absolutely crazy and end up buying a 2nd DR-1. The real play here (IMO) is to buy the DR-2 and replace your XPA-1s. Sell the 1’s (one working one with the hiss) and recoup a decent amount of the money you will spend on the DR-2!

I just looked up the OPs Klipsch KLF30 main speakers. They are called 102db sensitive, but Klipsch is traditionally a little HIGH....
But even if really 96db or 97db? Not much power required. Another one of those 'how much power can we buy' situations.
You'd never get one of the XPA-1 G@ amps out of 'A' without causing damage to hearing and house......
And you WILL hear a difference in amps if it is 'unsuitable'......Handles the reactance badly or doesnt' work into very low impedances.
Tubes may not like huge swings in impedance....which cause response shifts.....
Better watts are better IMO, and anything in the 100 ->200 a side range should be adequate...and be capable of generating an Eviction Notice.....
10 watts continuous with 20db peaks SHOULD be grounds for hospitalization....and never touch any of the monoblocks....

I might add that I own Maggies.
Stereophile calls the 1.6qr 83.7db sensitive....but at 2 watts, so i'll be safe saying they are really no HIGHER than 83db.....
My power to the speakers? 4x200 watts and another 200 or so for the sub....below about 50hz......Call it 1000 watts.....
I suspect that really the number is somewhat lower....maybe 10% or so...
But for even 93db speakers? 100 watts would do.
When I look at those numbers, THAT'S when I realize how nutty it is to run 500 a side monoblocks with 97db speakers.......
I'd bet that my 5 or 6 watt 'garage' amp would play.....Not loud or with huge bass, but would work. The 50 or 60 provided by
a KT88 or 6550 tube amp (output tubes) would be FINE......
Infrastructure needs change, too. My singe dedicated 20 amp circuit? Would easily run a sub and amp......The rest of the
system......? Easily run from either the Isolation Transformer output of 400 VA max or other power conditioner outlets......
With giant mono amps? Costs for install of multiple dedicated circuits go UP and here in the SoCal market......possibly DRASTIC.
