Title says a lot. My son had a PS4 with a 500GB internal drive. We use the extended external storage, again a mechanical hard drive.
Anyone know how to upgrade the internal drive to a SSD? While having the external storage connected?
I can't find instructions on this. Just upgrading the internal storage seema easy but none of the methods talk about what to do with the external storage.
After I upgrade the internal storage I will move everything to it, but I con' t do it before.
Maybe just unplug the external storage completely. Then do the internal upgrade complete. Then after the restore plug back in the external drive?
I just don't want to lose my kids game saves and stuff.

Similar to computer you need everything disconnected. Also, have you researched how to get the operating system on to the new internal drive? I assume from a backup but do the research first.
Once up and going the external drive will have all the previous saved games on it. So just point to it and it should recognize the data.
There is likely a Playstation forum that has a how to on this somewhere. Good luck

I would definitely second that suggestion... The Playstation is like a computer... with its own added quirks and requirements... You DEFINITELY want to look on some Playstation-specific forums for advice from people who have done this successfully. (There could be specific size requirements or limitations... or even specific brands and models of SSD that work well... or don't work well... or other odd things you need to do.) There definitely is a procedure for reloading the PS4. It is well documented and available on the playstation site. I can backup the internal drive to an external drive, reload the OS on the new SSD and restore the system. My google fu must be weak because I can't find the procedure when you also have the extened external storage.
We are only talking 3 games at this point. 2 fit on the internal drive with the third being Fortnite, which I believe is saved across platforms.
For what I know about computers restoring the system should also restore the links to the external drive. Should is a dirty word, luckily its not mission critical.
I'll look for some PS4 forums.
I am fairly computer savvy. I built two PCs this year and built my first PC with a Celeron 300 SLOT processor and overclocked it to 450MHz back in the day.

This kind of sorted itself out. After reducing the amount of games down to the three they just barely fit on the existing internal drive. We are talking MB free not GB. Then I used the published procedure and it worked.
