I’m taking advantage of a 30 day free trial of Audirvana. I’ve just finished setting it up. I’ve done nothing to customize it. I just went through the standard set up and started listening to Tidal. I decided to try it because it would allow me to run my Mac mini from my iPad. That’s the only reason. However I think the sound is improved? Is that possible? I’m going Mac mini via usb to schiit yggy dac to my Freya.

The learning curve for customizing it is a bit steep, but if you take the time to address one tweak at a time you will be rewarded with some great sound. Roon is fantastic with its metadata handling, has a nice EQ system and Roon ARC lets you play your music library anywhere you can take an iPhone. But as nice as Roon is, it does not sound as good as Audirvana unless you are using HQPlayer imbedded in Roon. Of course, nothing has a learning curve like HQPlayer. The great thing about Audirvana is it low cost compared to the much more expensive Roon.

Activate hardware control in Audirvana and the sound will improve.Settings are found by clicking the setting icon upper right corner. Select optimize system for audio playback and select Extreme level. The volume level vary a lot between albums, but the volume leveling function takes care of that.Set it to preserve album dynamics.

I used to run it, and it did make a difference on my Mac mini. Good stuff. How much is it now?

If Roon or Audinirvana were to support Amazon Unlimited, I would use either one. It sucks that they only support Tidal and Quboz.

Have been using Audirvana since its inception probably over a decade ago. Its evolved immensely over those years and sound quality has always been a cut above. I also use it with a Mac Mini via usb to my Gustard A26 DAC. Awesome sound. As others have stated there are many settings and configurations to play with so hang in there, experiment to get the best sound. As for cost there are two version, Studio and Origin. Studio comes with streaming capability while Origin is local files only. Studio is also a subscription based affair while Origin is a one time purchase, well until the next upgrade. Personally I have never cared much for streaming but did run with Quboz for a couple of years but to me the sound was never quite as good as music played from local files. I also found it more difficult to focus while streaming sort of ADD similar to flipping channels on FM radio or equivalent but it is a fairly good way to explore new music.
The long and short, highly recommended.
