Since this morning, we have NO telephone service via Consumer Cellular. Every attempt results in a "call failed" notice. I realize that this isn't unique to Consumer Cellular (or to my geographic area), but you'd have thought that with all the resources of the telecommunications industry that they'd have better security.
This goes back to my comments on database security - until there are huge fines and mandatory prison sentences for those who allow hackers into their systems, security will continue to be slack. And don't tell me that hackers are impossible to anticipate - there are only so many vulnerabilities to exploit. Ignorance is no excuse.

We’re unaffected in the north east, although it’s been in the news all day…… Another instance of it depends

I've heard that there are or were "major outages" on AT&T here in Tennessee... (I assume they are the network Consumer Cellular runs on???)
I don't know the details... I'm on XFinity... which runs on Verizon.

How about some huge fines and mandatory prison for the hackers/perps? That would probably have to include some folks in our three letter agencies.

Since most hackers are out of country, I'd favor a targeted cruise missile instead. Of course, AT&T is claiming that this was all caused by a software upgrade. We'll probably never really know.

These Wireless carriers have an unfathomable responsibility to the end-user.
A little bump in the road…… I don’t care. I only have to think back a few years when I was married to the landline because I didn’t have a choice and the quality of life without having that tether in my house, it’s too good to qualify.
So for my part, I’m all too happy to give them a pass. Everybody has problems once in a while.

Banks, governmental agencies, cell phone companies, and many others ACT as though they have NO responsibilities toward their users. If my Roon install breaks because my computer OS provider sent an automatic update, Roon shrugs their figurative shoulders and says "we'll get a fix out soon." There aren't but a few operating systems out there - is it unreasonable to expect Roon to communicate with Apple & Microsoft to verify that upcoming OS updates won't break their software?
The local Office of Motor Vehicles recently had a MAJOR data breach. They lost just about every file in the state. The OMV shrugged their (figurative) shoulders and said "our software vendor will issue a patch soon." As if that compensated me for loss of all my data!
My cell service was down for a day. Will the cellular company offer me a discount on my monthly bill to compensate? No - they shrug their (figurative) shoulders and say "a software update went bad" as if that should explain why their update wasn't tested on a sandboxed network before wide-scale implementation.
Enough excuses - These problems have NO solution other than to hold the sources fully liable for the economic damage caused by their own carelessness. Don't try to tell me "they're doing all they can" either - they're doing what they consider cost-efficient. Until the costs become more significant, the customers will continue to pay the price.

There’s only one thing regarding AT&T that I needed to come up with a plan for so that I can just go ahead on with things that are important and not think about it anymore and that’s the billing.
The first of each month I have to look at the bill and decide whether or not I’m going to pay it online or do the snail mail which is what I prefer because I like a paper trail for everything but they don’t let you because of the timing. I can’t be bothered anymore, so I came up with a solution that I can live with.
If the bill gets here too late for it to arrive on time without a late charge from them I just hang onto it until the midnight hour and pay it online. Otherwise I mail it.
The cable bill is the same deal for whatever reason these two utilities are very arrogant with their billing policies and if you don’t play their game you subject to a late charge. Again it’s petty crap that I don’t have time for so I just came up with the solution and this way I don’t have to think about it anymore.

Hopefully there is not some precalculated number of minutes you were denied service to be compensated the $5.00 www.nytimes.com/2024/02/25/business/att-outage-credit.html
