Since I hooked up my top speakers, when I play anything ATMOS is any app other than Netflix - audio is great w/appropriate dialog volume.
But, I found that anything in Netflix that has an Atmos soundtrack - the dialog is VERY muted relative to all else. A little web searching and I found that, once a movie is starting to play - if I hit the down arrow I get language options. I can change it from "English (ATMOS)" to "English (Original)" and suddenly the dialog volume is normal. And, my XMC-2 continues to show it's receiving Atmos audio.
I'd like to have Netflix default to this, but I don't see an option within the Netflix app that's playing from my Roku or in Netflix.com. I'd like to set it as default so when my wife uses the system she's not griping about this issue. It's easy enough to do about 3 clicks on the remote, but...she won't like it.
Anyone else have this issue? I'm seeing plenty of dialog on the web that says this happens across a range of streaming players, so it's not just my Roku.
(And, FYI, the new Roku 4802x fixed the issue of not showing ATMOS content, so "yay"...)

Roku is kind of an oddball with audio. I'll check mine when I get home. I've got an Ultra, but don't recall which version.

From what I am reading - it's not just the Roku Ultra that's having the issue. I have been using an older 4660rw, but it didn't even show Atmos content as an option in Netflix. At some point, Roku updated their devices and the newer ones (like my 4802x) do show it. Both the older one and newer one have low dialog volume on Atmos content unless I choose "English (original)" Mark

Mark I took a look at the Netflix app on my LG CX and with an Atmos program playing I saw these options which seem similar to what you describe. If I select French [Original] (Atmos) the XMC-2 reports Atmos and dialogue is fine. If I select French [Original] the XMC-2 reports DDSurround and 7.1 ... and the dialogue volume does not change.

Thanks - I'll check that out. I'd have to run Roku to my LG and ARC back to the XMC-2 to try it. If it works, it's question of whether my wife would better tolerate running as it's set up and clicking a couple simple settings...or choose the Netflix app on the LG and use that. As is...I suspect option #1 will generate less swearing. She only uses the theater on her own if she's on the treadmill. And, the only app that has an issue is Netflix...and it's only when running Atmos content. Word is that Netflix has known this for a long time and continues to do nothing about it. Mark

English [Original] (Atmos) DD+ ATMOS English [Original] PCM 2.0 Dolby Surround edit: Disregard the misreported video. It's DV, but the app doesn't work so well on a MacBook Air.

Thanks, Mark Well, here's what I've tried tonight. In the Roku Audio Settings: Passthrough allows my to select English [Original] ATMOS or English [Original] and get two different results, as we now know. AUTO has the same Dolby TrueHD ATMOS no matter which English selection I make within the NETFLIX movie settings. When PCM is coming through from the Roku, I don't get ATMOS.

Mark With Auto, neither English selection seemed to make any difference. But, although I didn't use the meter to measure the SPL (which I'll do today), I think it was at the lower volume level. It seems that only PCM is at a higher volume level relatively speaking.

That's not a simple question... There is a way to send encoded Dolby Atmos content over PCM... called MAT. However it is up to the source device to support Atmos and encoding it into MAT. (Most TrueHD and Atmos-capable devices can decode MAT ... but not all devices include the ability to encode it.) For my system, PCM is always louder than anything Dolby. And, for a guess, you guessed well! Can PCM pass Atmos? And, if so - do I set that on the Roku or in my processor? Thanks, Mark

With Auto, neither English selection seemed to make any difference. But, although I didn't use the meter to measure the SPL (which I'll do today), I think it was at the lower volume level. It seems that only PCM is at a higher volume level relatively speaking. I've been playing around with "auto" vs. "passthrough" and trying different content to hear the effects. I've been trying the movie "6 Underground" vs. the series "Our Universe". If I choose "auto" and play either - the dialog is way too low until I switch the audio in the movie/series to "English (Original)" instead of "English (Atmos)". Then, it's fine. And with either choice, the XMC-2 shows Atmos as the audio playing. If I choose "passthrough", I still hear a difference but maybe smaller (?), but when choosing "English (Original)" instead of "English (Atmos)"..."6 Underground" still shows Atmos on the XMC-2, but "Our Universe" shows "surround". So, I'm going to leave it set to "auto" and just toggle to the "English (Original)". Hopefully Netflix sorts this out soon enough. From what I'm reading, this also creates issues for people watching Netflix on a TV instead of a surround system. Whatever Netflix is "showing" to downstream components, it thinks it's playing through a multichannel system instead of TV speakers for Atmos content. Mark
