Just picked up a pair of Magnepan LRS+ speakers... I had to break out the old first gen 800 pound beast, my Emotiva XPA2... It sounds incredibly good with these Maggies, fills the room with that three dimensional sound that I was expecting. I tried a Class D amp, and it sounded good, but very two dimensional, no life to it. Then I broke out my old Emotiva USP-1 preamp and hooked it up to my PS Audio Stellar Gaincell DAC... The USP-1 has a built in active crossover, the reason I am using it. I split the frequencies at around 80ish. So, 80ish hz to the Maggies on the top end, and around 90ish hz to a pair of the REL T-Zero MKIII subs. I have a Sublime Acoustic active crossover coming, but for now the old USP-1 is doing a fine job.
Fun stuff! What really blew me away, after the Maggies, which sound INCREDIBLE, are these little 6.5 inch REL T-Zero MKIII subs I picked up on the used market, these puppies are giving my 13 inch SB3000's a run for their money. In fact, I like the RELs better overall with everything I have thrown at them. They really fill the room with punchy bass and do it invisibly. Then I added the active crossover to the Maggies, everything lit up in a good way. I cannot get over how much better the overall SQ is now. I wish I would have realized what and how to use an active crossover years ago, and what it can do for ones listening enjoyment. I cannot wait for the Sublime K231 crossover to get here, which is much more accurate then the USP-1 and the Rolls SX45 I also have in the mix.
If you have never considered using a crossover, the Rolls SX45 is a good one to cut your teeth on, unless of course, you have an old USP-1 laying around. ;-)
Oh, the Maggies! I cannot get over how good these speakers sound. I have never heard a panel speaker and am totally blown away. The way they project the sound, and the three dimensionality of it all. The strings, the voicing, with the right DAC, boy do these sound fantastic. And I cannot believe they are only a grand! They walk all over my Zu DW6 Supremes, which was rather disappointing... The Zu's are staying, but I will be running them with an active crossover, I have yet to experiment with this combo, and I think I will have outstanding results when the crossover gets into the mix.
