Well, I picked up a pair of Magenpan LRS+ speakers, a couple of REL T-Zero subs and a Rolls SX45 active crossover... Sounds fantastic!
Searching for an amp... I tried some Class D, the Crown, and my old first generation Emotiva XPA-2... I had a Parasound A23+ in here, and the consensus was the Emo was better. This old Emotiva XPA2 continues to impress. I had the new Emotiva DR2 in here too, the old XPA2 bloodied her nose and sent her packing. I was hoping, with the Maggies, the Crown would be the amp, just the headroom alone... Nope, the Emotiva is so musical, instrument separation is outstanding on the old girl, everything else was sterile and or congested.
Emotiva needs to bring these old amp designs back. At least I can recap and tweak when the time comes.

Hi localnet - I agree with you wholeheartedly. The Generation one and two Emotiva power amplifiers sonically kick the Generation three offerings coming and going. It isn't even close. ALL of those who say the Crown pro amplifiers are "audiophile quality" either don't know what they're talking about, or else they somehow don't hear the glassy treble of the Crowns. The Crown XLS series sounds even worse because of their cheap digital converters. SOME of the Crown amplifiers can sound from pretty good to excellent (PSA-2 series and the PS-400 series, for example), but you've got to listen. If you ever get the chance, listen to the Odyssey Audio amps and/or VanAlstine Audio amps. Some good stuff there and for affordable prices! Boomzilla

The Crown amps are not made for musicality, they are made for sound to reach the back of the building! No more. I didn’t believe an amp could sound so poorly and purchased a second hand on. After first installing it I thought something was seriously wrong with the sound. Popped in a very old low powered Sherbourn amp and the music came back.
Mama always told me that if I had nothing nice to say then I should’nt say anything at all! In this case I’m hoping to help friends not have to experience the shortcomings of this Crown amp.

Hmmm, not quite. True they are made for venues FOH and so on. But they are not schiit boxes in sound. Quite the contrary. If you are looking for the real meat in the music, probably not your first choice. I have the Crown XLS-1002 and they are on the personless side. Made for what the event engineer has in mind ahead of it. Heard them so far in 3 different venues along with other Crown Amplifiers, and they do the deed well. The XPA-2 is in a whole different league and its mission is way different than the Crown. Kind of the right tool for the job, but in the end you have to like it. I did a video thoughts and feelings with a BAS-X vs. the Crown a way back and got quite some hate from the Crown fans. Hey you can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself. Kind of my thoughts and impressions. I will be repurposing those Crown amps I have on another project. TBD.

I ran an older Class A/B Crown amp for years as my main amp and changed to an Emotive Bas-x A2. The difference was minimal. Main reason was because the older Crown had fans running all the time. I either had to hide it in a closet and run cables, or change amps. I ended up getting the Bas-x A2 just to simplify things. The Crown had a louder floor noise, and I prefer the sound of the Emotive, but overall quality change was very minimal. Still using a Crown XLS1000 to power my home theater subs. That runs quiet, so it's all good. I don't have experience on Crowns class D amps full range, but for HT subs, they rock. If anyone needs budget power, don't put your nose up to used Crown class A/B amps.

The Crown amp I had in here was just OK, for a garage system or something like that, I would not hesitate installing one. These are not meant for home two channel audio, unless it is all you have or can afford with hard to drive speakers. I could not even tune the congestion out of this thing. It did start to sound better in time, but when the gal with golden ears entered the room, it was back in the box. First words, "What happened?", LOL! I plugged the old XPA2 in, and she said that is better, and then started pointing out the instrument separation and overall sound quality improvement... Then she says, "I saw the box", referring to the Crown. And I have to agree, it sounded like do do.
Then the old XPA2, like I stated earlier, even the Parasound A23+ could do what this old gal can do. I have had a few amps through here, and this one has been here the entire time, since 2008.

Crown = sound reinforcement….. look elsewhere for anything else.
