So on the Emotiva website, the XMC-2, which is been out for like forever has a whopping 12 user reviews and they are all 4 or 5 star reviews. If those truly are the ONLY 12 reviews that have been submitted, that would indicate Emotiva has sold, what, less than 60 total units (the notion here is that if that unit is truly as amazing as the reviews would indicate, I figure at least 1 in 5 buyers would take the time to submit a review justifying their great purchase).
Call me skeptical, but I presume Emotiva has sold many more than 60 XMC-2's and that the explanation for the paltry 12 reviews is that the review submissions are being moderated and only 4 and 5 star reviews ever make it to the final cut. Moreover, the posts on the emotiva lounge would indicate there are plenty of XMC-2 purchasers who are not happy with the performance of that unit. It's hard to believe that none of those unhappy customers would take the time to document their experience via a submitted review.
Therefore, I've concluded that in the best case, the reviews are worthless; in the worst case, they are an indication that only 12 of the presumably hundreds of XMC-2 purchasers are happy with that unit.

In my opinion, the ratings are filtered, especially those of the preamps and avr. Otherwise they would never have such a good rating, not with all the problems they had and sometimes still have. I don't own anything from emotiva at the moment, but I have read through a large part of the comments from the preamp thread.

If you go to ANY manufacturer's website I think you'd probably find the same situation. The manufacturer wants positive reviews, and has no incentive to publish negative ones. Want a better selection? Visit an independent site. I like YouTube or Secrets of Home Theater & High-Fidelity (conflict disclosure - I write for them), but there are plenty more around.

All reviews are biased. The real review is between the lines; just like most of the music is between the notes.

Of all the Emotiva gear I've own, I've never put a review on their hom page. I have put plenty here on the Lounge. I think I even put one about the XMC-2 here. (EDIT: Yes! I did! Thread is "KlineMJ's Review of the XMC-2")
Bottom line, there are many more than just 12 reviews. Just not on their home page.

You’re putting too much stock in “reviews“ for a product on the companies own website. Independent reviews outside of the company are meaningful and useful…… Reviews on their own website are entertaining

It is a collection of data of which you base your decision from a wide number of sources. Manufacturers sites are just one. Reviews are all over the place. You want the most honest and helpful comprehensive ones you can find. YouTube has many "I like this or that" not with allot of science to back up their assertions including my channel. For better or worse. Some will chart the data too though few do. Audiosciencereview.com only measures for the most part. Maybe that means something to you. Or not. Best case has nothing to do with reviews at all. What do you want? Expectations, desires, must haves comparing perhaps what you already have, and what you want different. Reviews are set from the reviewers data points but not necessarily yours. Hence why a ton a data searching is helpful if that is your thing. Processors are the most complex thing audio today. The fog of confusion is huge.so are the prices. So yeah, your due diligence is wise. One of my theater sources is Ripewave Audio on YouTube, another would Gene D. At Audioholics. Don't think for a moment that these are necessarily Snow White Reviews. These guys have to Monetize their site to keep it alive. One of most annoying useless channels I have seen is The Cheap Audio Man. My opinion. You might like the dude. Happy for you. Take your time and do the wise. The cheap Ill informed always buys at least twice.

You stated that you "figure at least 1 in 5 buyers would take the time to submit a review". How did you come to that number? If I figured it was 1 in 283 does it mean Emotiva sold 3,396 XMC-2's. And when you say "in the worst case, they are an indication that only 12 of the presumably hundreds of XMC-2 purchasers are happy with that unit." you are assuming that the other 4 of 5 are unhappy. How did you come to that conclusion?

Probably only the person who oversees the web site knows if the customer reviews are moderated or filtered. I've seen company web sites that post both the good and bad reviews. I don't agree with your assertion that at least 1 in 5 buyers submit reviews. That's 20%. I think far fewer than that do, but then that's my opinion. Probably those who are either ecstatic about the purchase or those who are livid and upset, and more likely the latter than the former. I've had plenty of Emotiva gear over the years since 2009 and for the most part have been highly satisfied with it but never posted any reviews.
