This is only the fourth time in my life, so far, that the 17 Year Cicada emergence has happened, it's just beginning . . . They just began emerging in Illinois a little over a week ago. During the next few weeks billions of them will singing in the trees at very high decibels day and night! They will be everywhere, can't avoid them. This one is the first on my property to appear last week. It's in the process of splitting open its exoskeleton form as that it's in when emerging from the soil, to then take a different form with wings. In a few days I won't be able to do any Dirac calibration runs due to the noise outside. They're already loud enough to hear inside, and there aren't many out there yet.

Cicadas are LOUD! Like REALLY loud. I remember being at uncle's farm once when I was young - You had to leave windows open at night since they had no AC. The cicadas were SO loud, you couldn't sleep!

Are they related to those little black caterpillars lol?
I don’t know, but I’ve been living in this place since 1995 and I’ve never seen anything like what’s going on now. In fact, I just came back in from blowing off the house with the Leaf blower. Two or three times a day on the deck. My wife just brushed one off my back when I came in. they are a pain in the butt and they come down on a thread like spiders. this whole week has been a time with mother nature, throwing a curve at us here in New York in northern Westchester , just before the caterpillars was all the tree sap making my feet stick to the deck yuck. Are we having fun yet?

There are different Broods in the various regions that have them. Each Brood has its own time clock for how often they emerge. In Illinois there are two Broods we see here. The Northern portion of the state is covered by Brood XIII which extends into Indiana, Ohio, and parts of Wisconsin, and has a 17 year cycle. The lower portion of Illinois has Brood XIX and emerges every 13 years, and this Brood is huge and covers a bunch of states. This year is rare that both Broods will emerge simultaneously in Illinois which hasn't happened for 221 years, so a narrow band of the state will have both at once. The population of both Broods is expected to be about one trillion!

First time I ever saw and heard cicadas was mid 90's so I'm guessing the 13 year brood. I was at a mountain bike festival in Jim Thorpe PA and got there Friday afternoon as usual, set up my tent, went for a ride, we had dinner and went to bed.
Then at like 4am ... WTF! ALIENS! I had no idea what that noise was but it was all around us and phasing back and forth across the Mauch Chunk Lake. WTF!
So then we got up in the morning and saw them all over the place. Went for a ride and were picking them out of our helmets. And then at like 4pm ... silence! We did fry a few in the campfire that night though.
But dead quiet ... until 4am again!
Creepy!

Good luck getting to sleep Scott!!! I’d be curious as to the decibel levels your SPL meter would measure.

The cicadas in my neighborhood have just recently been revving up. It's been cool to cold at night and has been raining a lot the last couple weeks, but starting yesterday there are now certain trees with lots of them singing and starting to get loud! But it's a tree to tree thing. The males flock to one tree in an area so the group can get as loud as possible to attract more females.
Today was the first day I've been struck by the little beasties, and why is it that they always fly into our heads! It only gets worse from now on. The hotter it is, the more active they are.
edit: I pulled out my leaf blower and need to keep it with me for the foreseeable future so I can blow them out of my path as I walk to/from my house. I really don't like messing up the bottoms of my footwear.

You may want to wear a helmet until further notice!………at least to and from the van.

What are the specs for distortion and SINAD at that level?

About 20 miles North of Chicago it's 85dB in my yard. They just began getting loud a couple days ago in my neighborhood, so there's more output to come, just like stated above with over 90dB!!

Today is the day they ATTACK!!
They are everywhere now! It's been very cool and rainy around here with only a few warm days, and these critters like hot weather. So today it's already very warm and they are going nuts!! I can't walk 5 feet without being accosted by them.
And the birds are having a field day as well, swooping around and catching cicadas as they fly in their haphazard way.

According to a few nature videos I've seen they are triggered to come out when the ground temperature reaches a certain point. The good thing is that they'll only be around for a week or two. Adult cicadas don't have mouths; so they don't bite and they don't eat either. All they do is mate, lay eggs, then die - and they're good food for lots of other critters and are apparently even good fertilizer). The eggs hatch in a few weeks, the little grubs drop to the ground, burrow in, and disappear until next time. Today is the day they ATTACK!! They are everywhere now! You laugh but... According to a nature video I watched pretty much everything else, like crickets, chirp by rubbing their legs together... But cicadas actually have two special organs, like little speakers, on the sides of their abdomens, just for making noise... (Yes... the little buggers are full stereo.) What are the specs for distortion and SINAD at that level?
