I received my TA-2 and ERC-4 about a week and a half ago. Everything functions just fine and I am really enjoying the sound. Just one question- As soon as I power on the TA-2, I can hear the faint sound of the cooling fans running. Is this normal? It doesn't affect the sound at all, and I can't hear them running unless I'm within a foot or two of the amp. I don't mind them running all the time, I just want to make sure this isn't a problem. Any help is appreciated!

Dust Bunnies INSIDE the amp clogging flow or a sensor?

I don't know. It's brand new, only had it since May 29. I'll give tech support a call. Amp runs very cool, even at higher volume. Thanks for the suggestion!

I guess the questio is ......'should fans run all the time' And are they variable speed where they run slow until the amp heats up, than they speed up? My computer does that.

Agreed. Only possible exception would be if the pet Persian Cat uses amp as a nest........
My last PC, with the box under the desk, needed a good cleaning 3x yearly. It had 7 or 8 fans, total, and sounded like a helicopter landing on the roof most of the time. 2 filtered fans blowing IN on front. Fan on top. Fan on back of case. PS had a fan. CPU and GPR both had fans.

Yeah, they can be a mess…… My newest one is a tower compact enough to be up on my desk instead of the floor, which helps immensely Still, out the front door 🚪 It goes, where I blow the thing out and the whole scary mess goes into the breeze. I give the neighborhood gardeners (with their Leaf Blowers) a run for the money. (Perhaps I should just hire them)

Worst part of the mess was the CPU heat sink. I went aftermarket with a large 'mushroom shaped' sink of aluminim AND copper. The central part of the blades really would clog....... I ran it at full-speed all the time and omitted the speed control doohickey from the mix.
Case was a Lian Li, which I bought at the importers warehouse, up in Orange County. This was the most detailed, best constructed case I've ever seen.... Latest model supports up to 11 fans and is good with heat-sink 'radiators'......Heat Pipes.....

The cooling fans are growing exponentially from the beginning of this thread that we have successfully derailed lol (However, unintentional) My wife was doing telecom work in Connecticut years ago and they had the data room and you want to talk about fans. This is a very large area with a subfloor to handle all the cabling and the room was kept very cool so all that massive equipment wouldn’t burn up, so to speak sometimes she would be over there after hours till past 11 o’clock at night

Cooling is not just an amplifier issue. ALL electronics lasts longer when not allowed to get TOO hot.
Computers are vulnerable due to density of circuitry in the integrated circuits.
Discrete power handling devices need PLENTY of heat sink.
It just sort of suprises me that a fan / sensor is more cost effective than simply enough passive heat sink in a clean-sheet design.....
Though a heavier and larger amp will cost more to ship.....

I remember those guys! Well regarded at that time.
Don't forget PASS makes a (rated) low power, pure 'A' amp which runs 1 1/2lb Per Watt.....and that's a 30x2 amp.......
I'll take TWO!

I've had a TA2 for a few months now, and as soon as I plugged it in I thought wow, why can I hear these fans, it's not even warm yet? It seems like they are not speed/temp controlled.
When there is no audio playing you defiantly hear them, It's a medium pitched whirring. The amp is now installed in a rackmount recessed in the wall which does muffle it, so it isn't a huge concern.
It is not a dealbreaker for me, yes, if not installed in a rack, closet, cabinet, etc you may hear them when the room is silent, but this TA2 sounds sooooo good I have been in love with listening to it.
I don't want to mess with it under warranty, I don't know if they are supposed to be so 'audible' (I don't want to say they are 'loud'), but I will likely be looking to modify the fan setup in the future.

It sounds like (No pun intended) Emotiva made certain the fan operation would in no way be distracting to source material. This does remind me of being spoiled, after the digital domain was introduced, and all the noisy nuances of playing records faded into the sunset……… Unless you’re a hard-core, of course. My own amplifier has a power supply that has the slightest hum to it that I never thought anything about until it was written about And in turn, redesigned to bring the power supply hum down to inaudible. There are no fans involved at all.

Are the fans single speed or Vary as the amp warms or cools.... As far as I can tell they are single speed all the time. Mine come on at power up and sound exactly the same at all times. I did buy my TA-2 as an Emotiva factory refurb (although it was 100% indistinguishable from a brand new factory sealed item when I unboxed it), but maybe mine does have a problem and is running at full speed and not supposed to? Hopefully Keith can just confirm for everyone if they are supposed to be variable speed/temp or indeed designed to run 100% speed at all times, so we can stop wondering if there is a problem with our amps or is normal?
