Hello friends, I’m searching for a very reasonably / discounted 🥸 priced phono preamp to go with the rest of my piece together system. If you have one just sitting around gathering dust I’d love for you to dust it off and let me know. Not looking for anything fancy but I would love to hear this Dual 1219 come back to life. I’ve already check with Emotiva and they don’t have any refurbished XPS-1’s. Needle Im using is an Ortofon OM 10. Pre Pro is an UMC-200. Not a newish system, just a bunch of Misfits! This has been a long time coming and I believe the finish line is not far off. I’ll keep everyone posted.

Nick, I would guess you are looking for something other than this > link <, like something with volume/tone controls, integrated amp, or less expensive?

I'll try to find them and check to make sure they still work. If they do, I'd send them to you for cost of shipping. I've had them since college, and I graduated in '86 from Purdue. So...they are old! (I, however, am not!) Mark

Unless I misunderstood him, he wants lower price/discounted/used. And - not with volume controls/built-in amp/etc. Just a phono pre-amp. (Like the XPS-1) Mark

I have one of the original U Turn Audio's Pluto pre-amp that I bought back in 2018 and it still works perfectly. I would let it go for $30.00 + freight if you're interested.

Nothing fancy as the whole system is pretty much a Frankenstein! If its mot too much trouble please let me know. Thanks so much.

Sometime between 2012 and 2014, I had my final afternoon listening session with some of my favorite old records, using the Sunfire theater grand processor II, which did have a raised photo input, but no HDMI accommodation. Going at that time to Emotiva’s, XMC1, I knew this would be the final hurrah, and happily so. After that, I put the whole thing to bed.
I recall back then you could walk into circuit city and find an outboard phono preamp hanging on a rack for around 40 bucks.

I found my old Luxman CX-1 but I only have a low output moving coil cartridge. It plays in the +20 and +30 dB boost setting but volume is very low. I don't have a MM cartridge to try it with, so I can't guarantee it works for MM. Somewhere, I have another head amp...a Plexus...can't recall if it's MC only or also MM. I'm seeing them for $80-100 on line. Plexus Head Amp LinkIf I can find mine, I'll test it. But, it's not in the obvious places! Mark

Hey - I just happened to Google "used moving magnet phono preamp" and I found a BUNCH of new ones for $12-$70 NEW. Several on Amazon from Pyle and others. Check out the Pyle PP999. $16 on Amazon right now! Worth a shot! Mark

I’ve gifted a few items that others are now enjoying. I’ve been looking at MM phono preamps and I had one but not enough boost in it for the Ortofone MO 10. Happy 4th my friend! 🎉💥🎉💥

I may have to spend more to get the boost needed. Thanks again for your efforts. The lounge has so many kind friends and I sometimes don’t find enough time to say hello and visit. Sorry folks, Life has been complicated these past few years.

Yes, Good old days, Radio Shack is no more but I did see a parody that the 80’s had called and they wanted their store back. Found it!

Sorry folks, Life has been complicated these past few years. I was happy to try! The Lounge does indeed have so many helpful folks - I've learned so much. I hope life becomes less complicated for you. Mine got less complicated thanks to retirement - then it got more complicated with kids out on their own. I used to be able to visit them by knocking on their bedroom doors. Now, my baby girl is a 2 hour drive away, and my son went from Purdue to Charleston, SC to San Diego, CA in the past couple of years! At least I get to visit some new places! Mark

I have a bit of very serious advice about phono preamps... based on a lot of years of experience... The job that a phono preamp does is actually quite difficult. A phono preamp starts with a very low level signal... To which it must then apply a huge amount of boost... And must also apply an absurdly aggressive and extreme amount of EQ (which should precisely match the RIAA EQ curve)... And, to make matters even worse, different cartridges interact in different ways with the circuitry in the preamp... The upshot of all this is that there is an absolutely huge amount of variation between phono preamps... A lot of very low cost phono preamps are very noisy, or prone to overload, or have inaccurate RIAA equalization... But some are actually quite good... or, even if they aren't good at all, may work very well with specific cartridges... And, since phono cartridges themselves are electromechanical devices like speakers, like speakers they vary widely in how they sound... Which, in turn, means that the same cartridge can sound wildly different with different preamps, and the same preamp can vary wildly with different cartridges.... And also, like speakers, people tend to have very different opinions and preferences when it comes to phono preamps... This means that, unless you aren't very fussy, be prepared to experiment a bit... And remember that the way a phono cartridge and preamp sound will depend on both and how they interact with each other... (So don't assume that a specific preamp, that you've heard, or read a review of, will sound the same, unless you're using the same cartridge it was reviewed with.) And DO NOT assume that an expensive phono preamp is going to sound better with a specific cartridge... Incidentally, as a bit if perspective, the cheapest phono preamp is probably going to be "a $9 special from Amazon"... And the most expensive one I can think of offhand costs around $20,000 ... (And I'm sure you can spend more if you try... ) It's also worth mentioning that the phono preamps is devices like integrated amps and receivers also vary widely... The ones included in other devices are often not as good as the separates... but that isn't always true either...

Check out the Schiit Mani... $149 new, you can pick one up on Fleabay for around $80. I had one a few years ago and it sounded great with my Rega: www.schiit.com/products/mani

I have used the XPS-1 and the XSP-1 gen 1 & 2 and they were all good with my Rega RP6. I may try the XPS-1 and the Mani 2 if I dig up a few $$. Thanks @keithl Thanks @luisv I just may go that route

Hey, this is all in good fun and I don’t knock anyone who pursues playing records for pleasure and it’s fine… But suddenly the thread took me back to that glob of dirt stuck on the needle…… Or the ground noise someplace that I would become a detective to solve it…… Or just gently rubbing the needle to make sure I’m getting a signal…… or just looking at the stylus and realizing that without a magnifying glass, there was no way for me to tell if it had degraded to a point where I needed to replace it… Or if the Cantilever Was losing its compliance…… Or if I would walk across the room and cause the record to skip…… Or I went to flip the record and it would Stick to the mat due to static electricity…… Or if I would go touch the tone arm and get a static electricity shock that could be somewhat unnerving…… Not sure if I missed anything……

The op's plan is to inexpensively play albums from his Dual 1219 turntable... This is a hobby. Remember?
