Hey guys, I have a Gen 2 XPA5 that stopped working. Emotiva no longer does the in house repairs for $300. I found a well regarded local shop that said all 6 caps need to be replaced. He said two are very clearly fried and the other 4 are in bad shape. He said it's best to replace all 6 caps, and then clean it the amp. He said it's possible he might find more damage once the caps are fixed, but he won't know until he gets that far. I feel the price is high but I just don't know... so I have a few questions.
1. Do you think it's reasonable to replace all 6 caps? 2. What do you think is a reasonable ball park for cost for doing the diagnostics, replacing the caps and cleaning out the amp?

I do think it’s reasonable to replace all 6 caps, as for cost, my local shop charged $225 for diagnostics on a big tube amp, partly because they were so heavy. So maybe $200-$300?

I think that price is reasonable. Replacing caps can be done DIY if you know how to work a soldering iron. High quality caps can be bought online. I’ve been lucky knowing friends who are EEs. Make sure the shop uses high quality parts.

That seems quite excessive to me but he prob is I've already paid for the diagnostics so he kind of has me by the nuts.

Yeah, that’s on the high side of fair but like you said you’re in it up to your neck IF He warranties it for 12 months in full then I would weigh that against what it would cost to match that performance with a new unit. If he is as highly regarded as you say then he should do that without a problem

The CUSTOM is to charge for an estimate than Waive that fee IF a repair is made......After all, in many cases the tough part is figuring out what is wrong.
You BETTER change all 6 caps. And only from a tier 1 brand. ELNA? Rubycon? Nichicon? maybe even Panasonic? a few others qualify. Do NOT use
a 2nd string part. You can even source them yourself from Digikey. You need to know a few things, like connector type, voltage, capacitance........
Depending on how difficult it is to get AT the soldering end of the caps? 500 is WAY too much. I call that about 200$ an hour PLUS 100$ for caps, which I
suspect will not be from my short list......

Given the age, I’d be very wary of the “additional damage” caveat.
