Are guitars really cheaper than audio reproduction equipment?

I have a 5.1.4 Atmos setup: L/R Front Main: Martin Logan 60xti C Front: Martin Logan 50xti L/R Surround: Martin Logan FX L/R Front Height: Klipsch RP-500SA II in 'Reflective Enabled Middle' mode. These are upward facing 'Atmos' speakers mounted on top of the L/R Front Mains.
L/R Rear Height: Klipsch RP-500SA II in 'Small Rear Height' mode. These are slightly downward facing mounted at ceiling height - but not in the ceiling - about 5 feet behind the listening position.
I rarely hear the Rear Height Speakers. This is despite playing a lot of Atmos movies and Atmos music.
In particular, if I play music labelled '7.1.4 Atmos', the rear speakers are usually silent. Why? I would expect all of the .4 speakers to have signal.
Couple of questions: Should the L/R Rear Height speakers be in 'Small Top Rear mode'? Consider a sound track with content in all of the '7.' channels. On an Atmos sound track, how does the renderer map a '7.' signal to a '5.' setup?
On a non-Atmos sound track, how does the Surround decoder map a '7.' signal to to '5.'? On a non-Atmos sound track, do the '.4' speakers ever get used?

I had something similar in my last set-up. Sold the house and will have all ML’s again in the new house. I have 60XT’s left and right front. 50XT center. Motion FX/FX2’s for the rear/back speakers, 4 Motion Atmos ceiling speakers. Set up wasn’t ideal as it was in a loft with one side open and seating against the back wall. New house will be a dedicated rectangle media room 13’ x 19’. While I was very close to the surround/back speakers, the Atmos speakers were quite present. After running the Yamaha YPAO optimization I did have to tweak a few of the speakers a bit. You might have to do the same with your Atmos speakers. Trial and error.

On a non-Atmos sound track, do the '.4' speakers ever get used? Need a bit more info please. In Setup::Speakers::Preset-1/2::Size::Dolby Reflective:: do you have anything checked for any of your speaker channels? If you use Levels, do all channels make the pink noise sound? When playing music, what is the incoming audio stream shown as, and how is the outbound audio shown? If the outbound is shown as ATMOS, this doesn't guarantee that all speakers are used. I've run into this when using Roku. So, what is the source and what's being shown on the Front Panel Display of the processor? Your Reflective Speakers should be setup as such, and any others not. I would suggest to at least try Sm Top Rear and see if the rears behave differently for you. On non-ATMOS tracks, and when using AUTO, all the speakers in my 7.1.4 system get used by up-mixing the audio via DD Surround. If I set the audio to Surround, then only the channels in the movie mix are used, so if it's a 5.1 movie then my Tops and Rears stay silent. Not all movies will make sound in all channels all the time. When I want to check this out, I turn off all amps and disconnect any interconnects for channels I don't want to hear just so I can hear only one or two channels such as a Top, or Wides. The volume level of most sounds is a lot lower than one might think it'll be. The channels you might think have nothing playing just might have something playing but at a very low volume, and even putting my ear extremely close to a Top still doesn't always allow me to hear sound that's actually playing. So, turn off everything but the one or two channels you're investigating.

I think there are three possible issues: 1) You have selected middle and rear. This is a mistake I think. Have you tried setting them to Reflective Front plus Rear height? (see my link below to the Dolby recommended setups for 5.1.4 Hybrid Dolby Atmos-enabled / overhead speaker placement ) 2) The Atmos renderer may not direct overhead sound to rear heights, particularly as you are missing rear surrounds, so yes, try it as Small Top Rear as you suggested to see if you get audio 3) In a 5.1 base channel setup, the audio from 7.1 to the missing rears needs to be directed somewhere and the DSU may utilise a combination or rear heights and / or side surrounds perhaps, meaning that the rear heights may not also get Atmos? Either way, see this: www.dolby.com/about/support/guide/speaker-setup-guides/5.1.4-hybrid-atmos-overhead-speaker-setup-guide , which states: 5.1.4 Hybrid Dolby Atmos-enabled / overhead speaker placementLeft and right front Dolby Atmos®-enabled speakers Centre speaker Subwoofer Left and right surround speakers Left and right top rear overhead speakers (Not quite representing your speaker array, but set the Emotiva to this) You could also test to see what the DSU is doing by setting them as front and rear top speakers, to see how the DSU directs the Atmos to a more "standard" array, to see if the rear speakers get audio directed then
