Hello once again friends, Mrs and I have decided we want / need dash cams for the automobiles. This post is my first step in researching the topic because we have a wide variety of smart diverse tech oriented friends. I was thinking that it would require front and back recordings that includes recordings of speed. Interior recording for police interactions would be nice as well. Are civil rights are easier to keep when everyone is be recorded. I have nothing against the folks in blue and I rarely have an interaction with one but I’ve personally seen some very questionable interactions. Easy installation would be nice but not a requirement. in this world of sue happy people a recording can be a most useful tool.
Please share whatever you can about any dash cam you have experience with or are looking at. Perhaps you own one. I don’t believe our lounge has ever discussed these handy tools. Thanks in advance

My work vehicle has a BlackVue 4K setup with front and rear facing cameras. This system has GPS speed recording, as well as impact sensing which can be a bit overly sensitive but I don't care so long as an event is recorded.
The video quality is very good day or night.

Thanks in advance I’ve got a FitCam-X in my Audi. Simple install that looks factory. I only have the front one installed. They do make a front & rear set-up. Not the best one out there as far as video quality but I think it’s fine. In today’s world I think it’s nice to have. I’m more concerned about someone smokin’ a red light and later sayin’ it was green.

In today’s world I think it’s nice to have. I’m more concerned about someone smokin’ a red light and later sayin’ it was green. Back in '87, I was going through a green light, and a woman coming the other way turned to her left directly in front of me just as I was halfway through the intersection. Needless to say - we hit - her front passenger-side bumper to my driver's side front bumper. As we got out of our cars, she started yelling at me accusing me of running a red light and claiming she had a green turn arrow. I turned around and looked - her side only had red, yellow, and green lights - and no turn arrow. I just said - "OK, that's fine...just tell the officer who arrives that". Then, I walked away and waited for the police. Once they arrived, we each told our stories, and the cop looked at the light and said "Ma'am...there is no green turn arrow at this intersection". I just smiled as he wrote her a ticket. Mark

Back in April, I pulled out onto the main road and only got about 1/8 of a mile before a large rock (about the size of a softball) came skipping across the road and hit my car. I saw it coming but there wasn’t anything I could do. Fortunately, it missed the windshield and/or body and hit the left rear wheel. It gouged it pretty good but only cost me $140 to get fixed. Could have been MUCH worse. Dash cam caught the whole thing. Watching the video later on, there was a cement truck that went by shortly before the rock enters the screen. I’m guessing it probably came off that truck but pretty hard to prove. After inspecting the car I did go back and retrieve the rock. Wrote the date on the bottom and I’ll stick it somewhere in the yard at the new house when it gets done. Some might look at it (the rock) as being bad luck but I look at it as good luck since it didn’t come through the windshield and hit me. That coulda been bad…

I’ve thought about Dashcams for our vehicles for a long time now, but have not pulled the trigger.

In an accident I’d prefer video verses eyewitnesses my word against another. Proof positive for my defense is open and shut.
