CMX-2

Hello aLL. I have an "original" CMX-2 (with the LEDs) that I *suspect* is causing an intermittent noise in my system. I've had it installed in my system for over 8 years without issue. But recently this is not the case. The noise is akin to a needle dropping at the beginning of a record, lasts for a few seconds, then acts up again in an hour or so. I opened the CMX-2 to visuaLLy inspect the internal parts for any obvious damage and there is none. When the CMX-2 is removed I do not hear this sound. Anyone else reading this post have a similar occurrence?

Sorry I can’t really help but you should definitely take it out of your system. Give Emotiva a call and see what they recommend. Good luck!

It seems unlikely that the CMX-2 is causing noise... although I can't say it's impossible. But, if the CMX-2 were to fail in such a way, I would expect it to make the noise continuously... and not "off and on". However there is one thing you might like to look at. As with any line noise filter the CMX-2 is designed to block noise coming in on the power line from reaching the gear plugged into it. In other words the CMX-2 isolates devices that are plugged into it from noise on the power line that it's plugged into... But, if you have two devices plugged into the CMX-2, or into a power strip that's itself plugged into the CMX-2, the CMX-2 doesn't isolate them from each other. And, in that situation, it's possible that the CMX-2 could make things worse rather than better... It might be helpful to know exactly what equipment is picking up the noise... And how everything is connected together... Hello aLL. I have an "original" CMX-2 (with the LEDs) that I *suspect* is causing an intermittent noise in my system. Not enough storage. Obliviously the problem. 😂

As I said... it's not impossible... but it really doesn't make sense that it would only happen sometimes. Although I don't think we've ever seen it happen, I can imagine one of the diodes in the CMX-2 becoming noisy... but, if it did, I would expect the noise to be continuous. There's nothing in the CMX-2 that switches on and off that would account for the noise only occurring sometimes. Unfortunately this sort of thing can be VERY difficult to chase down. For example, it's actually possible that you have a new noise source somewhere... And, while the way the CMX-2 isolates the gear connected to it from the line makes that gear less susceptible to LINE noise... That isolation could actually make certain devices MORE susceptible to OTHER noise sources (like noise finding its way in through the interconnects). And that could happen if it's working normally... or if it now isn't. To be quite honest... the CMX-2 is a relatively simple device... and (OTHER THAN those LEDs) not at all prone to failure... But it can happen. All I can offer is the usual advice... The noise you describe sounds like the sort of noise I would expect to be caused by something turning on or off... That's the sort of thing that tends to cause both line-noise transients and sometimes even through-the-air transients... Try to determine patterns... like if the sound occurs when the air conditioning is on... or when the air conditioning turns on and off... It would probably help to figure out if the noise is coming from the amplifier or from something upstream of it... And I can say that, when noise issues occur, air conditioners and light dimmers are usually right at the top of the list of suspects. It seems unlikely that the CMX-2 is causing noise... although I can't say it's impossible. But, if the CMX-2 were to fail in such a way, I would expect it to make the noise continuously... and not "off and on". However there is one thing you might like to look at. @keithl. I realize what I'm reporting doesn't make sense that it would only happen sometimes. This is why I asked if anyone else reading this post have had a similar occurrence. I can't be 100% certain it's the CMX2 giving me trouble, but since I've removed it I'm not getting the noise. The noise is so bad it sounds like it can damage the speakers.
I haven't ruled out my MF amp of amp inside the Triton speakers either, but it doesn't appear they are the cause. Anyway, again I'm just curious if there is someone else that found the CMX2 to be troublesome.
Thank you aLL for your input.

Other than the LEDs the CMX units have been quite reliable... and they are pretty simple. As far as I know we have not had anybody else report anything similar (not that turned out to have anything to do with the CMX). @keithl.
