We happened to catch Emotiva at Rocky Mountain Audio Fest this year. My buddy and I both listened to the 8.3s and were pretty much blown away. They were our pick of the show and even if we had the big bucks to spend on some of the 30K plus speakers that were there we would be buying the the 8.3s. We had a pretty detailed piece by craig chaquico that they played for us not once but twice and all the details came through. The bass on these speakers is very tight and controlled and the tweeters are very nice and not harsh. My buddy has a set of Martin Logans and he is thinking about putting them on craigs list for a set of these. Overall these are great speakers.

I agree wyomose i heard them at Emofest in Franklin Tenn. Emotiva's home location, and too was impressed the way the 8.3s' sounded. I heard just for comparison a pair of $3000.00 speakers for fun when I got home, and some over $8000.00 for the pair that didn't sound any better or more accurate and or more engaging a listen. I felt when I heard the 8.3s' the sound was very coherent and clear, and very dynamic. It had great presence too. I'm not saying the other speakers were worse than the 8.3s and they did in some areas exceed the 8.3s but I just couldn't understand how that would mean I had to spend so much to get them. Didn't make economic sense or sound sense to me at least to my ears anyway.

What Logan's does your friend have and what is he driving them with?

Not sure of the exact logans he has but he is driving them with a sunfire reciever. He has a 7.1 set-up with them. 2 fair size floor speakers for left and right fronts and the rest are hung from the wall.

He might also consider putting the Sunfire on Craigs list. Both the ML's and definitely the Emo speaker would benefit from a strong amp into 4 ohms to drive them with tons of power which they can handle. A 35 lb receiver (no it doesn't put 200 watts out with all channels driven) just doesn't have the power to do these speakers justice no matter what spin Bob Carver puts on it.
For ($2097), much less than he paid for the Sunfire, he can have an XPA-2, an XPA-3 and a UMC-1 that will run circles around the Sunfire. Or for $999 more he can have two XPA-1's for the 8.3's. Just remember when you were blown away by the Emo speakers at the show they were not being driven by a Sunfire (probably some XPA-1's).
Just some food for thought. ;D

He already has "IMO" better speakers then what Emotiva offers. Adding some Emo amps will without a doubt net him results that are better than what he heard at RMAF.
