I started a thread a few weeks ago about my ERC-1 emitting a chirping sound when spinning discs. The general consensus was that this was not normal and I should send it in. So, I got a hold of Emotiva and send it in. I heard back from an EMO tech a week or so later, and he said that he could not get the unit to make any weird sounds. I asked him if he could try again, and let it run for a while, because sometimes it takes a while for the chirping sound to start. He re checked it using a bunch of different discs and couldn't find anything out of the ordinary, "normal operational sounds" to be exact. At this point I as convinced that the problem must be that my AV rack wasn't completely level, and that was causing the problem. I got my ERC back today, pulled out my level, and found that it is sitting perfectly flat on the shelf. I put a disc in, turned it on, and within a minute the chirping sound was back. This has me seriously perplexed. I am almost positive that my player did not make this sound when I first got it. In fact, I remember thinking the player ran very quietly the first time I used it. I have owned a ton of CD and DVD players, and I don't think I have ever had one that ran as loud as this one does now. Other ERC owners, would you consider your ERC to me a loud cd player? Does it make a audible chirping, knocking sound when a disc is spinning? I can just barely hear mine from 8 feet away with no music player, and sometime I can even hear it during quite passages in songs. Also, the fact that my ERC usually starts out running very quietly, then this chirping starts midway into a disc makes me think that this cant just be, "normal operational sounds". Has anyone ever experienced anything like this? Any idea what could be causing it? What variables could make it run loud at my house, but not for the emo tech? I really love my ERC-1, but as it is, it's pretty distracting.

I don't have any noise with my player. It's at least as good as my Arcam, if not better. It's really weird that you're getting a chirp.
Mark.

I haven't had any issues with mine. Does the chirping happen in the player itself or through the speakers? Have you tried using a different input or different sources on the input you are currently using?

The sound is coming from the unit itself. I've tried it on a different shelf, not plugged into anything except the wall, and it still makes the same sound. Its a pretty fast repetitive chirp, a couple times a second, so it sounds like it has something to do with the disc spinning.

I also assume that it does it on all CD's?

Can you record the sound it's making and email that along to Emo as an mp3 or equivalent? Lonnie or Nick might have some ideas. There's definitely something amiss here. Haven't heard of one doing this & mine certainly doesn't. Sorry you're having the issue and they couldn't reproduce it. Obviously it's loud enough to be a distraction in your setup.

Great stuff Pitbull.
Nickwin. I have had the ERC-1 for a couple of days now and have been playing it non-stop. There has been no chirping noises coming from it. The only audible noise I hear a slight thump when I turn it on and when the ERC-1 goes through the loading process.
When did the chirping start? a month or 2 after you had it?
Is your ERC-1 in a enclosed cabinet where heat can't dissipate or is your ERC-1 near a subwoofer or speaker? Maybe when Emo tech was testing it they had it on a work bench or something isolated from any kind of vibration?
Good Luck. JD

I thought about trying to record it before, but I don't have much to record it with, and I'm not great with computers either. I'm going to give it a try when I have some time though. After playing around with it a little tonight I found out that the sound starts at the same time every time. If I turn the unit on from standby, stop and restart a song, or skip ahead a song, it will start chirping at exactly 10 seconds into the track (If I fast forward it starts 10 seconds after I hit play) I tried over 10 times and it was at exactly 10 sec every time) . But as one track ends and it transitions into the next, the sound keeps going uninterrupted. If I hit pause the sound become much more rapid (about twice as fast) Now this is just getting weird. To give you an idea of what it sounds like, its very similar to when the ERC is loading a disc, and it first starts spinning and makes kind of a whirling sound. Its a very similar sound just not quite as loud.

One of the first things that came to mind when you mentioned the chirping sound from your ERC-1 is that you might need to take steps to decouple it from the shelf it is sitting on. Any mechanical noise produced by the spinning disc can be amplified if the frequency, or a harmonic, just happens to be coupling perfectly with the shelf you can be hearing the vibrations.
Try moving it to a solid platform and place some cork, rubber feet, felt, etc to decouple the ERC-1 from what ever you have it sitting on. Oh, if you have anything sitting on top of it, that could also be the culprit. If you still hear chirping after trying these things, I would have to say you have a defect. Good luck.

I don't have anything sitting on top of it, and I actually had it on some cork/rubber pads originally. When I noticed the chirp the first thing I did was take out the cork pads thinking that maybe they were the culprit somehow. Needless to say, removing the pads had no effect. I'm not really sure where to go from here with Emotiva considering I sent it in and they send it back saying there was nothing they can do...

Give them a call again and let them know of the new information that you found. Even though you have already sent it in, it shouldn't be a problem and they won't leave you hanging.

Nickwin
Any luck with the chirping issues with your ERC-1?

I finally got around to calling Emotiva back about this. The tech seemed very sure that this was normal for a ERC-1, but after I pushed it a little bit he spoke to a manager and agreed to replace my ERC-1. They said they will get me a new one sent out right away today, so I am very happy with the customer service all in all.
After the tech told me over and over that all ERC-1's sound like this, I am going to feel like a real dumb a** if my replacement sounds the same way, but I am 99.999% sure that this is not right and everyone on the forum seemed to feel the same way. I will post my findings as soon as my replacement arrives.

My ERC-1 is silent. I don't see how a chirping sound could be considered normal! Good that you are getting a replacement.

I have had my ERC since June and play it often. I have isonodes as the feet and it rests on the XPA-3 and my Sub amp sits on top of the ERC and also has isonodes for the feet. Absolutely quiet! I am very happy with this unit! By the way Nickwin I think you handled the situation very well and glad that you were able to get another unit!

Well, I got my replacement ERC-1 today, and just like I expected it runs completely silent. No chirp whatsoever ;D. I'm not sure how the technician didn't notice the problem when I sent it in, but the bottom line in Emotiva sent me a new one anyways, so I am very happy with their support.
Thanks for all of your feedback, without it I probably would have believed that the ERC-1 is just a noisy player.
