Can anyone recommend any HDCD discs to listen to. I've found Neil Young, but that's the only one I've found so far, other than lots of classical, which I really don't listen to.

The single best source for high quality HDCD albums is from Reference Recordings. I have purchased 30 to 40 of their HDCD records in the past few months. They are among the best sounding recordings I have ever heard. The rival the sound quality of SACD albums. I recommend that you start by purchasing their "Sampler Albums". They are a steal and give you a good feel for the type of music you can expect from specific artists. It's a good way to find other albums you might enjoy listening to. The site is full of interesting information about HD quality recordings and the history of how HDCD encoding was developed and the advantages it gives the music. A very interesting site. Many of their records are Emmy winners and have received numerous accolades such as Best of the Year, Editor's Choice, etc. The Stereo Mojo web site has given numerous of their recordings its highest recommendations. Just click the link below to visit their site. www.referencerecordings.com/JAZZ.asp

Thanks fellow emophiles. I recognize the professors mug. Spectralman, without his cape and mask. Ha! I like it - Spectralman, the alter ego of mild-mannered Keith Johnson! There were so many albums made in the format that gave it only the slightest acknowledgement, which is really a shame. There were a couple of HDCD listings I knew of online, but both appear to be defunct or relocated. To quote from the Wikipedia page: "As for "mainstream" popular artists, Tool, The Beach Boys, Beck, The Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia, Madonna, Mark Knopfler, King Crimson, Roxy Music (also Bryan Ferry), Van Halen, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Mannheim Steamroller, Kenny Chesney, Dixie Chicks, The B-52's, NOFX, Da Brat, and Mike Oldfield have released quite a few of their albums on HDCD. As of January 2007, there are roughly the same number of titles released on SACD as there are on HDCD-encoded CDs." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDCD

Thanks scottl, I noticed that on ebay there is a bunch, but they hail from Japan and are called mini lps. Kinda costly, and I wonder if they will play in north america.

I stumbled onto one by accident. The Wedding Singer 2 soundtract is in HD. Couldn't even find it on listed on the disc, but the ERC-1 decodes HD on it. SO, if you like 80's music...

Needs a player that will extract the HDCD info. (Yes, the ERC-1 can do that) As for "mainstream" popular artists, Tool, The Beach Boys, Beck, The Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia, Madonna, Mark Knopfler, King Crimson, Roxy Music (also Bryan Ferry), Van Halen, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Mannheim Steamroller, Kenny Chesney, Dixie Chicks, The B-52's, NOFX, Da Brat, and Mike Oldfield have released quite a few of their albums on HDCD. As of January 2007, there were roughly the same number of titles released on SACD as there were on HDCD-encoded CDs, but SACD has increased more in number to date.

Doc If you go to the Reference Recording's web-site, there is a very interesting article about HDCD... how it was invented, by whom, the techniques, etc. Very informative and good reading. The Inventor of HDCD is the tech guru for Reference Recording and he hand built most of the equipment used in recording the masters and mixing and encoding the master tape to create the HDCD media. His work in this area, revolutionized the CD industry. Most of the red book CDs being produced, at the time he invented HDCD, were highly compressed releases -- totally lacking any dynamic content. Well engineer HDCD album have a dynamic range similar to LPs and many of the recordings rival the sound you get from SACD albums. www.referencerecordings.com/default.aspJust click on the link, above, and have fun browses around. Many of their releases are Emmy winners; and Stereo Mojo has given numerous of their releases its highest recommendation, "the stereo mojo's Publisher Choice Award. Follows is a quote from the Editor of Stereo Mojo about one of the Reference Recording's albums: The sampling rate is very high and a 24 PCM word length is shaped down to 16 with great care. I’m sure this is Johnson’s own version of dither.
So there you are. That’s about as much as I can say without getting ridiculously technical. This is a real winner in my book, and I’ll be “referring” to it for a long time to come. There are few people around be they musicians or engineers, who could have made such a wonderful CD as this.

Over at Doom9's Forum, some one has created a windows comand line tool that upconverts Riped HDCD cd tracks to 24 bit wav files. The 24 bit wav files contain all 20bits of the HDCD audio. The link to the Doom9 thread: forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=129136 I have used tool on all my HDCD CD's. Also there is one or two comercal software products that will do the conversion as well.

thanks roadrunner,
i am very familiar with 'professor johnson' as i have quite a few of his lps and a handful of cd releases from the 80's to early 90's. as you well know, i checked out of 'high end' audio for quite a while and i am not up to speed on a lot of what has happened over the last 2 decades. i am willing to learn though. btw.... the xpa-2 and xpa-5 shows up tomorrow.

I listened to the Beach Boys' "Friends / 20/20" HDCD in the ERC-1 and the tracks displayed as HD01, HD02, etc, presumably denoting that it was playing an HDCD. Tried a Lyle Lovett HDCD that I'd borrowed ("Anthology Volume One, Cowboy Man") and didn't get the same display, just the normal track numbers. Any ideas why?
